Back home safe! Make it to Gaskin on the first day and base camped on a nice site with "stairs" leading up to it on Saturday. Caught fish on Sunday. Hung at camp and napped and read on Monday. Packed up and out on

Had some good storms Monday night. Tuesday started out nice getting out but the winds kept building and we almost tipped a canoe on Poplar heading back in. Took on a bunch of water. Got pinned near the first island and hunkered in a bay, tied off canoes to trees, calmed crying kids, finally able to signal a motor boat on the lake to bring wife and kids to Rockwood to formulate a plan. Ended up being rescued by Mike at Rockwood. What an end to a great trip!!! Truly a foundational wilderness experience for us and the kids! More pics to come from the big camera once I load them up.

Good for you; how long has it been since you tripped?

Excellent!

Have fun and I can’t wait to read the report. That’s one of my favorite areas.

Haven't posted in years, but we're getting back to the BWCA, this time with two of our kids who haven't been there before. They are 9 and 14. I'll be bringing my camera, some fishing rods, and a journal so hopefully I'll have some good pics and a report to share next week when we're back. Bunkhouse tonight, #47 Lizz in the morning if we're not weathered in. Looks like rain but we're well prepared as long as it's safe to paddle!

We just missed you! I remember when I took photos of you and your daughter leaving on your trip a few years ago!

We checked out of Cabin 4 at Rockwood on Saturday the 22nd. It was a fun week for us there, although the thunderstorms Tuesday evening and Tuesday night were pretty spectacular. Was glad we weren’t out in a tent that night!

Hope you have a wonderful trip and will look forward to a trip report!

My mother in law and her boyfriend checked out of cabin 5 on the 22nd as well. They said they were in Grand Marais when the storm hit on Tuesday and had to wait for the trees to be cleared on the GFT in order to get back to Rockwood.

They probably crossed paths with you on their 1st trip to Rockwood after all these years of us just missing you. I was at Rockwood in a bunkhouse June 7 after some hiking with my 19 year old daughter and then all 5 of us were at East Bearskin campground June 10-14. I stopped at Rockwood one night so my 16 year old could use the shower house and I helped Mike and Carl with the garbage/recycling run so we could chat while I waited for my daughter. They didn’t pay very well. LOL.

These last two posts interested me. We said “Hello” to the people in cabin 5 last week, and did wonder where they were at the time of the storm. Friday evening we invited the gentleman over for marshmallows (we had a campfire) but he declined. Had no idea they were related to “ducks”! That would have been a fun conversation opener—although have never met ducks in person. (Why does it really feel like I have, though?)

Sounds like difficult conditions today again. We are safely back in Michigan now and experiencing the usual letdown after finishing a trip to the canoe country.

Geee wiz, small world or maybe not. My wife and I are currently sitting on the dock outside cabin 5 as I write. After our normal sunrise paddle this morning we headed into GM. The wind continued to build all day and many damaged trees/limbs have finally landed on the GFT. Heads up driving is required, canoeing too as there are caps even on the small lakes inland.

I wish you would come to Canoecopia next year, ducks. I’d like to give you one of those hugs. :-)

Exactly. I feel like we are friends that go way back even though we’ve never met in person. I don’t think they’d know who ducks is though..LOL. They don’t know my bwca.com alter ego. I’m going to tell them they missed out on getting to know “the wise lady”.

This makes me think of the time I ran into and I met Boppa in person at Rockwood. I was near the outfitters building talking to Mike and Carl and some customers when a vehicle driving by stopped and backed up and asked “ducks”? I asked “boppa”?
He jumped out and gave me the biggest hug and we chatted for a few minutes and then he said goodbye and jumped back in the vehicle because they had a long drive ahead of them. You should have seen the look on everyone’s face when they asked how long it’s been since I’d seen him last and I said “. I just met him right now”. LOL.

One of the things I love about this site is how well we can get to know each other through the internet. It’s a very special place. Just like you, I’ve leaned on Boppa and he’s leaned on me during some tough times and some good times.

2011 and 2019 were my last 2 trips. I've done 6 total overnight trips and one day trip into numbered lakes in Ely with a church group.

Brought a journal but forgot a pen/pencil. Luckily that was about the only thing that was left out of the packs.

Sounds like a great trip with a wild ending. Glad you made it out safely. My first trip out of Rockwood was in 2009 and my wife and I stayed at that campsite on Gaskin and it’s still her favorite site to this day.
