Thanks. Think I got it now lol. This article is very helpful. So what I gather is there are two things happening here at the same time.

Potlach sold land (according to the article) to the conservation fund- who, from the onset, intended to resell to the appropriate parties. The land that is in the superior national forest it is being sold back to the usfs.the land that was bough on reservations is being sold back to the tribes. This was the plan all along when they purchased this land according to the 2020 article.

Also happening at the same time: The usfs is buying land inside the bwca. I know there were some red tape/holdouts when the bwca was created so this part of the purchase is just to align the land which is already within the bwca but not owned by the federal government into federal government land to continue trying to make the entire bwca owned and operated by usfs.

We own property in St. Louis county. We got a notice about some massive USFS proposed land purchase. I’m pretty smart but I can’t decode this governmental speak. lol. Anyone know the skinny?

Long story short USFS is looking to purchase 80,000 acres of state land and 3,200 acres of St. Louis county land in the BWCA. They are also purchasing 17,000 acres of conservation fund land in the Superior National Forest.

Why, I have no idea. There are a million links here. Here are two: one for the project and one specifically for the TCF land.

After reading more of the article, I wonder if the purchase will eventually be gifted back to the native tribes. That seems to be the agenda MN is on lately.

My understanding after reading Mocha's article is that the the 17,000 acres outside of the BWCA were formerly owned by Potlatch and purchased by a national non profit with the intention of selling the land to the appropriate entity. So if the land lies within the SNF it will be sold to the SNF, and if it's within boundaries of a reservation it will be sold to the tribe.

I remember hearing a few years ago that Potlatch was divesting its land.

Pretty sure the new state park on Vermilion was Potlatch land.

That was purchased with Legacy funds and was purchased by the MN DNR to have that land available for hunters and other recreational use. I don't think the State could ever turn that over to tribal groups without going thru a lot of legislative rule changes.
Similar but smaller tracts in the 1000's of acres were bought west of Brainerd and south of Park Rapids for the same reason. My Friend from MN DNR Wildlife pushed hard to obtain this land.
The BWCA land exchange has been talked about for over 20 years. Its a good move and will be easier to manage as a BWCA.

I think this has something to do with school trust lands within the BWCA.
