Pinetree: "sedges: "The point of this all COULD be that the old planning guide is still an active link even though it is clearly out of date and there is a new document that supersedes it . USFS needs to clear old stuff out of their website. This is a typical problem with government sites. Federal is usually not so bad. County and municipal websites are the worst." If you want even more confusion, here is a third version that looks to be from between the one Pinetree posted and the most current one: https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5353284.pdf It also came from a USDA FS website, but it looks kinda out of date: https://www.fs.usda.gov/visit/destination/boundary-waters-canoe-area-wilderness |

You want to criticize me for that. Go ahead. I also repeated a site USFS just posted on one web site just recently. Even Tho maybe outdated in certain segments. It also spurred discussion on caring for the BWCA and we have some sharp eyes, who corrected where it was needed. |

To have all the posted planning guides in one thread so that any future reference to the planning guide people will know there may be some outdated guides. Duh. |

It wasn’t obvious it was out of date when he posted it. T |

"For reserved permits it does not eliminate the need to pay the $6.00 reservation fee and user fee deposit. They may be purchased in person after May 1 from any Forest Service Permit Issuing Station." Suggests there are unreserved permits available..... Pinetree - I like your posts with interesting links! Thanks. |

I skimmed through it and maybe missed something so correct any mistakes please. There was no provision for leashing your dog. Just said your dog needs to be under control at all times. Which still means if your dog is jumping on me on a portage while you aren’t in sight…you violated the rules :) There was no mention of IGBC containers, just bear resistant… Just to add further controversy to my post LOL I like how they call out the 9 person/4 canoe rules. There is a whole section that explains to church, youth and other non profits just because the 25 or so of you have separate permits if you meet up or travel together you are in violation of the rules. This was the reason the 9 person/4 canoe limit was instituted. When our Scout Troop went last year, unfortunately we saw several groups violating this rule. I love youth are getting introduced, but part of introducing youth is instilling respect for the resource and the regulations. As a scout I did not learn “follow the rules that are easy or the rules I like” The other part is if you run into a group on a portage or happen to hit A bottle neck you are not in violation of the rules. The rules clearly state you cannot exceed the 9 people 4 water craft “as a group”. When I pass you while you are doing your 9th trip across the portage you are definitely NOT part of my group :) So chill out and calm down Francis… “Group Size Nine people and four watercraft are the maximum allowed together in the BWCA Wilderness. You may not exceed the limit as a group at any time or anywhere (on water, portages and campsites) in the BWCAW. Smaller groups enhance the wilderness experience, chances of seeing wildlife, and decrease resource impacts. “ |

That is not the most current Boundary Waters Trip Planning Guide. This one is: https://usfs-public.app.box.com/v/BWCAW-TripPlanner. This guide is found the the USDA Forest Service's website for the Boundary Waters: https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/superior/recarea/?recid=84168 |

billconner: "Well, different question. If you get the seasonal card, can you get permits at the ranger stations without a $6 permit reservation charge? Correct, if you go in the day before or day of and pick up an open permit, they leave off the $6 reservation fee. You’re taking a chance, but it’s not uncommon to find unreserved permits. T |

billconner: "I would guess there are permits available for some EPs every day. Probably would be surprised how often the most popular were available by end of day before. " Yea I know a few people that just play entry point lottery. Go up and see what permit is available and take it. Never been burned that I know of, but they also don’t go in early August. T |

Pinetree: " BWCA-rules " Certainly a good reminder of the rules, but I think everyone would appreciate some context and comment with your link only posts. Has this document been updated recently with significant changes? |
