Due to increased wildfire risk, Koochiching and the northern half of St. Louis counties in northeast Minnesota begin burning restrictions on Friday morning, Oct. 11 at 12:01 a.m. Cook and Lake counties remain under the same burning restrictions.
Wildfire risk increases with sustained warm and dry conditions. Once a wildfire starts, it can spread quickly and be difficult to put out. With little precipitation and above-average temperatures in the extended forecast, fire danger is likely to remain high until the state receives significant precipitation.
In Cook, Lake, Koochiching, and the northern half of St. Louis counties:
?? Burning permits will not be issued or activated.
?? No campfires in dispersed, backcountry, backpacking, and remote areas. Campfires are only allowed in established fire rings associated with a home, cabin, campground, or resort. Visit the individual state forest or park webpage to confirm burning restrictions.
?? No fireworks are allowed outside city limits.
You can make a difference – keep safety top of mind. Over 90% of wildfires are caused by humans in Minnesota.

Dersu: "Just read a recent article about rangers finding hot coals in nearly every fire ring at abandoned campsites. I recall many warm discussions about whether a fire is out or not. Seems like a manly thing to assert an opinion, right or wrong. It gets weird if I throw more water when I think it's needed, and some people have a thin skin on this topic. Really, what the hell?"

This was most certainly true at campgrounds I stayed at or checked out during my recent trip. Many were nowhere near "cold to the touch" and several even had small flame.

DNR temporarily closing a portion of Chengwatana State Forest due to wildfire
To help ensure public safety, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has issued an emergency order of closure effective immediately for a portion of the Chengwatana State Forest due to an active wildfire.

The DNR is temporarily closing approximately 4,500 acres of the forest, which is located in Pine and Chisago counties. The closure includes the area between the Chengwatana State Forest Road in the north to the Snake River in the south, running the full width of the state forest from its western boundary to the St. Croix River National Scenic Riverway boundary in the east (please see the map below).

This area is closed to the public until further notice, including for recreational activities such as dispersed camping, recreational trail riding, hiking and other activities. The Snake River Campground, south of the Snake River, is unaffected by the wildfire and is open.

The fire is estimated at 140 acres, and no infrastructure or buildings are threatened. For the safety of firefighters, please do not use drones in the area. Federal regulations prohibit the use of drones above wildfires. If a drone is spotted near a wildfire, all responding aircraft are required to land or return to the airport until the airspace is clear, delaying critical firefighting efforts.

Not sure why there is a gray area I
Where deciding if a fire is out or not.

Another guideline would be, “run your fingers through the ashes and if they come out in one piece then the fire is out”

NOTICE: Pfeiffer Lake Fire
Fire Information & Location: On Thursday, October 17, around 6:00 p.m., a fire was detected on the Laurentian District, Superior National Forest, north of Big Rice Lake, Southeast of Cook, Minnesota, near the USFS Pfeiffer Lake Campground.
Threats: None
Containment: 100% at time of release
Description: The Pfeiffer Lake Fire was approximately 8.5 acres burning in timber slash in a future/ proposed prescribed burn unit on the Laurentian Ranger District within the Superior National Forest. Wildfire Crews spent the night working the fire and are cleaning-up around the edges and mopping up. It is suspected to be human cause; however, an official investigation has not yet occurred.
Resources: Public and firefighter safety are the highest priority and ground access could be difficult. In addition, the availability of firefighting suppression resources including personnel and equipment is limited due to large wildfires still occurring in western states and firefighting resources also supporting hurricane response efforts in eastern states. The National Preparedness Level is currently at 4.

I don't see the fire restriction ending soon. East of Ely last weekend a dusting of snow followed by 2" of rain. Today it is as dry as before the rain. Forecast is for 70s and winds gusting at 25mph.

Not surprised that people still have fires. So many have a double standard of the laws and rules are not for them.

A fire in the Chengwatana State Forest north of the Twin Cities covered about 140 acres on Friday evening, prompting the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to close a portion of the forest, a DNR spokeswoman said.

The Evergreen fire, which was discovered late Thursday afternoon, was confined to a remote area of marshes and heavy timber, said Leanne Langeberg of the department’s Forestry Division.

She said DNR crews were responding to the blaze and that no structures were threatened.

About 4,500 acres of the forest were closed, and activities such as camping, recreational trail riding and hiking were prohibited in the area until further notice, the DNR said. The Snake River campground south of the Snake River remained open.

The fire broke out about 12 miles east of Pine City along the Minnesota-Wisconsin border as gusty southerly winds and low humidity created “elevated fire weather conditions,” said the National Weather Service in Duluth.

The closed area runs from the Chengwatana State Forest Road on the north to the Snake River on the south and from the forest’s western boundary east to the St. Croix River.

No open burning or campfires were allowed in Pine County because of the dry and windy conditions, according to the DNR’s fire danger map on Friday.

Fire danger in the forest was listed as extreme on the DNR’s five-level danger scale, and the “situation is explosive and can result in extensive property damage,” authorities said.

Yep, I was camping at Hogback and work up Sunday morning to snow covering everything. And enough I had to find my windshield scraper and clean off the truck.

FYI, the rangers had placed red flags in the fire pits that say "No Fires." I've never seen that before.

Did the SNF get enough rain that the fire restrictions will be lifted? Heading up Wednesday morning.

Saw the flags out west in the fire pits on my last trip out there.
