1) The Way of the Hermit by Kent Smith - this was an exceptional read! It was awesome to read it while on a solo trip. 2) Spirit Crossing by William Kent Krueger - the latest in the Cork O'Connor series which is becoming my annual reading tradition in early autumn. 3) The 29th Day by Alex Messanger - a harrowing true story of a grizzly bear attack on young canoers during a multi-week wilderness canoe trip. 4) Where the Falcon Flies by Adam Shoaltz - true personal account of an amazing canoe excursion, like all of his accounts of his exploring adventures. 5) Let It Burn by Steve Hamilton - similar to the Krueger mystery series but I find these series less connected to the wilderness. Besides, without Henry Meloux, it'll always be second to Krueger. Takes place in upper Michigan rather than northern Minnesota. Please note I enjoyed all of these books; if there weren't so many more titles on my wish list, I would read them again. I also bring a Patrick McManus book on every trip and rotate through them - good, light-hearted camping and hunting humor. :) |

I worked in Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park during this Search and Rescue in 1996, a federal Law enforcement officer went missing and was not found until 10 years later deceased. "As Jon Krakauer did with Into the Wild, Blehm turns a missing-man riddle into an insightful meditation on wilderness and the personal demons and angels that propel us into it alone.” — Outside magazine Destined to become a classic of adventure literature, The Last Season examines the extraordinary life of legendary backcountry ranger Randy Morgenson and his mysterious disappearance in California's unforgiving Sierra Nevada—mountains as perilous as they are beautiful. Eric Blehm's masterful work is a gripping detective story interwoven with the riveting biography of a complicated, original, and wholly fascinating man. The Last Season |

A Wonderful Country by Bill Maggie. So much history dating back to the 1930's and forward-such a great read. Excellent book a must have along with Trapping the Boundary Waters: A Tenderfoot in the Border Country, 1919-1920 by Charles Ira Cook Great Christmas gifts. I am sure others have favorites-I have a few more I will add later. |
