270 degree overlook is it? Where the Border Route connects to the SHT

I like the hike from the Temperance River Wayside to Carlton Peak. I begin by following the river trail to the top then return down the road through the old quarry.
Great payoff on top with views of forest, lake and shoreline.
It’s 30 miles west of Grand Marais.

RE: Kadunce River trail

My favorite, but now is probably not a good time to hike that. Fall and Winter make it easier to get up the falls. Maybe the river is low now so who knows until you try it :)

High Falls up in Grand Portage is a bit on the long side (if you go all the way, past the paved trail), but a gorgeous area. Otherwise I'll +1 the Kadunce River trail but I did it in October when the water was pretty low. Bring poles with you to keep your balance as there is a lot of loose rock in the river bed.

Here's the Border Route Trail Organization's website for day hikes. If you have time and want something long the Moss Lake Loop is a good hike.

The Kadunce River trail would be a good start.

Twenty miles away and pretty popular but the Oberg Mountain Trail in the Tofte area is hard to beat for big Lake Superior and national forest vistas.

We parked at the Britton Peak trailhead off the Sawbill Trail and hiked to Carlton Peak, favorite day hike we’ve done in the area so far.

Interesting no one has mentioned the trail system at Cascade River state park and campground. Trails run along the river gorge which has some bridges and scenic views. If you want you can walk to the Superior hiking trail and the great views of Lake Superior from Lookout Mountain. Cascade is closer than Grand Portage and other systems. For more info just search Cascade River. Nearby Cascade Lodge has a nice dining room if you want a place to eat.

Mocha: "I was going to say that same trail. So, I’ll go with middle and high falls trails in grand portage state park. Also, is there a mt rose trail near grand portage with excellent Lake Superior views?"

If you're up for something aggressive stop in Silver Bay on the way up and do Bean and Bear Lakes. It's fantastic!

Going to be spending some time in Grand Marais in a few weeks. What's your favorite day hiking trail in the area?
