In a recent post. I saw someone reference this to a exchange that was taking place between two members. I thought it was appropriate to bump this up.
But, even though I agree with the principles of this, there are some people who come to this board to self promote themselves or to show how intelligent they by deftly making comments that can very easily be taken as a shots across the bow. I have repeatedly seen one of the newer members doing this and he finally got slapped by the "paw" which in my opinion was overdue.
This new member is also the member of another board where he reguarly "stirs the pot" and has become a persona non grata there.
So this is my message to that person. You are not the smartest person in the room, we are all equal here. So please don't bring your "debate posting style" to this board.
The Oath does not, in my opinion prevent this.

One of my secret vices is reality TV. I don't know... all the crazy people and the weird issues that they are perfectly fine splaying all over the TV is just mezmorizing!!!
But I come here to hear wonderous stories of the seemingly infinite lakes, fantasy fishing, wildlife encounters... I want to learn which paddling adventure should be my next, I want to hear the stories from the people who are older than me still treking through the portages to their place of peace.
I promise to leave reality TV behavior to the "Wife Swap" participants I might converse with- everyone here will get only the same respect and dignity I would give on... lets say a portage I might meet them on.

Great site.
Speaking strictly for myself; I try to avoid controversial subject matter. I do not come here to promote any personal/political agenda, or to argue needlessly, or create much ado, over matters of little consequence in the grand scheme of things. I try to treat people with respect; even people I don't know. I have the expectation that I will receive the same respect. I come to the site to have fun, and hopefully learn some things I don't know.
Therefore, you can count me in.............

I have sure enjoyed the friendly interaction I've experienced on this forum. Have also gained much important knowledge and even found an item or two to buy. Thanks to all of you!
I, too pledge to be civil and respectful. That being said, I also hope not to shy away from lively debate! My family doesn't quite get it: They think that each time I share a thought or opinion that contradicts a previous post, I'm "trolling." To the contrary, I think the exchange of different ideas, varying opinions, and ways of seeing things benefits us all and if my comment sparks a reply, then great!
The one time I can think of that I let my anger show was in reply to someone who had posted that while on a BWCA trip they planned to ignore the fishing limits, as they had done in the past, since it was so unlikely that they'd be caught. They felt that since they did not agree with the regulations, they had a right to break the rules and dared the rangers to catch and fine them. I was rather incredulous that someone would post this information, as I think most others on this forum would be as well, and I'm pretty confident that I would have near universal support if I replied the same way (I will) if a similar post ever happens again (I doubt that it will). I did not hesitate to tell that person that I did not respect such an attitude. BUT...and rather importantly, I believe I did remain civil about it and in all off this that is what I think we are all hoping for on BWCA.com

I joined this site in August of 2007 because I had done a few "completely outfitted" trips in the past and was looking to learn more. Because of this site and the good members on it I have "graduated" to the point where I now have all my own gear and have done several trips in the last couple years. Heck, I have even taken my young daughter on several trips to the great north. The comfort level that allows me to do this is very much because of the help I have received on this site. Now that I am a little more experienced, I feel good that I am able to reciprocate the help I received to others. The Spirit of the Wilderness in cyberspace!
Adam and the moderators have created a wonderful site for us to exchange ideas, stories, experiences and even a few laughs. Sadly, I fear that the site is becoming more and more angry and critical than it was when I joined. It would sadden me if this trend continues.
I have witnessed new members being lashed and criticized for asking simple questions. Screaming matches containing foul language have occurred in the chat room and on the forum. Post are deleted because they are inappropriate. Is this what the site is about now? Ridicule and snobbery?
I think too many of us forget that the username you are conversing with or responding to is actually another human being. It is very possible that the "username" you are arguing with could end up being the "stranger" that helps you carry a pack across a portage, saves you from the angry waters after dumping you canoe, or invites you to share a campfire on a cold night when all the others sites have been taken.
Please join me by pledging to treat all members (new and old) with dignity and respect. Remember, we were all "newbies" at one point and all of us still have much to learn. The wilderness is a wonderful place that teaches us many life lessons including Humility. Let us remember the lessons we have learned in God's country and try to live them in the forum, in the chat room and in our everyday lives.

True dat.
To be fair, I think some things people have written have been misunderstood because people write on the web with a certain familiarity uncommon among strangers in real life. When you meet someone face to face, you don't usually lead with light trash talking. Good natured ribbing can easily be misunderstood in the absence of facial expressions, tone, and context.

Dan,
Very good post and thoughts... As mentioned many of the people here agree whole heartedly with what you have said. As moderators we try not to intervene too much, and we hope that everyone gets along and that discussions progress as they should, with the exchange of ideas and tips. It is human nature to disagree at times, although it can be done civily.
The bad side of the internet as mentioned too, is the freedom to say in type what you probably would not say in person. There are other boards I do not frequent as much simply because of the bickering.
I like you, and everyone else think this is a premier site for the exchange of information about canoing and camping. The members here continue to make this board what it is, and you stepping forward with this Oath and Pledge of Dignity and Respect shows the integrity that is here! Again, Well Done!!

I am in agreement. Echoing where bertrand started also: I believe text messaging, facebook, myspace, cell phones and the internet as a whole in some extant are a bane on society! (I know that makes me a bit of a hypocrite being here) Typing these words can be impersonal and at times hurtful. As previously expressed, they are just words and don't always have the intended emotion behind them. My daughter and her grand-mother had a major misunderstanding due to one not seeing the other laughing at what was meant as a joke. Very sad. While I will continue to enjoy the good of this site I will try to keep it upbeat, helpful, and a measure to share and savor the passion for the BWCAW. Thanks for the thread! Pete

A bunch of posts deleted this morning, including mine reminding members of this oath. I wish people would think twice before condemning someone else's views. We don't have to agree, but stick to the subject instead of launching personal attacks. At the risk of being accused of bringing politics into this, we don't all have to stoop to the level of personal attacks of our elected leaders and representatives.

I don't feel I need to take any oath, as it is common sense that I have always abided by here. Light fun is ok, but any attack is not, even on unique opinions. I have only been "confronted" once in the last 10+ years and that was when I asked about flags in camps which went a bit viral on opinions, that thankfully Adam shut down. I was looking for peoples opinion but it got very out of hand. 95% of everything on this site has made my experience in the BWCA better, which I why I donate.
Be well

As a newbie I am so thankful for all that I have learned at this site. I still have a lot to learn so I plan to use it extensively for future trips.
I did read some threads in which some quickly degraded others for poor planning or bad decisions. It seemed really odd to me because it was so different than the virtual interaction that I experienced. Perhaps user-names cloak our human-ness too much. I know I chose mine without really thinking it would become the name I am known by. I might have chosen something more creative and more of a mask if I knew I would be on the site so much-- wave-whisperer,canoe-can-do, sparkle-water...
And the irony-- the BWCA wilderness ethic seems like almost as big a draw as the place itself-- a creed that says/implies leave no trace, respect the earth, be gentle...
So anyway, this oath/creed/pledge is a nice idea and I am all in. Karen

quote bojibob: "In a recent post.

I wonder how many of us are thinking: "Good God, I hope it isn't me?!" Perhaps it is a good reminder to us all. Good post.
On the other hand, paranoia runs deep. It wasn't me was it? No really, you can tell me. Honest, I will try harder. I am not that bad a person. Ask my friend. You can call him in a couple of months when he gets out early for good behavior. Really. Was it me? Just say it. I can take it. Another sleepless night in Minnesota worrying myself to death. There goes my grip on sanity.
It must be time to hit the water.

I'm in for the third time.
That said, I agree with bradcrc. I think it's great that this thread was ever started and great that it gets bumped when necessary. The value of the oath is not in taking it, but rather, maintaining and following it. It's sad, but all this thread really seems to do is to confirm what most of us do and feel anyway. I love this site and the vast majority of members are respectful and sensitive when they disagree with a topic or someone's stance.
The fact is, however, that some who have taken this oath have gone on to break it, which not only makes them disrespectful, it makes them hypocrites, as well. Another fact is that many who go against this oath never signed up for it in the first place. I actually have more respect for those people. Although they're disrespectful, they're not hypocrites, too.
I'm in and I will follow it. It's sad, however, that we ever needed it in the first place.

I note with interest that another popular paddling bulletin board has recently regurgitated a similar appeal for respect and decency. This seems to me to be more than a mere coincidence. I too am concerned and join the many members who have already pledged not to engage in such behaviour. Another Appeal for Respect and Decency

I totally agree. I feel the same. I came here a couple of years ago to help be prepared for my first outfitted trip. Now, thanks to what I learned here from others experiences, I have my own gear, plan more trips and take my kids because I am comfortable doing it with the knowledge I gained here. Thanks to all those who contribute to the community. I hope that someday when I am an experienced paddler, I can offer the same help to other "newbies" like I once was.

I rededicate my commitment to The Oath of Dignity and Respect. Anyone can be inarticulate at times including myself, and I will make every to respond in a positive fashion or refrain from responding. I agree to disagree, and do not want to squelch anyone's opinion. I have learned much from the collective wisdom of this community.

quote Kiporby:"I think too many of us forget that the username you are conversing with or responding to is actually another human being. "
Which is why I use my name. I have always found "usernames" to simply reflect back to the days of CB radios when we used 'handles' to disguise our true identity, or to be very immature as a minimum. I don't care what you say. It's childish. I spend a great deal of my time in the cyber world for many business and professional reasons. Many of the newer web sites I belong to REQUIRE that we use our real names and identities in our on-line profiles. It cuts the b.s. to nearly zero.

I would love to pay this forward! You guys never make me feel stupid. Yeah -Butthead often suggests doing a "search" on said posted topic.... that's been covered, but I liken that to my E6 in the Navy - who often made me do the research myself - which then - I learned faster, and retained better.
Regardless.... you've all provided me invaluable advice, and I just have to give a HUGE shout out to:
Cowdoc - You always give me the best advice, and chat with me at night - and I appreciate that! (even though you get annoyed at me for not responding, or being distracted with wine/chickens when you come into the chat room)
Canoearoo - you've become a "real life" friend, and I appreciate your friendship and your family so much!!!!
Basspro69 - for speaking matters of faith with me
Kiporby - for making me call you LT. Dan. My family referred to me as LT Dan when I went into the Navy - so I find it charming.
Bogwalker - for the rare lunchtime chat
520Eek - for chatting me up - late at night - and "watching" North Country with me.
Ducks - again - for providing invaluable advice! My daughter is excited to hang out with your daughters at wing night again!
Dan Cooke - your product line is bare none!
SevenOfNine - Thank you for your winter camping advice which made my first cold - tent trip a success! (And everyone else who commented on my post.)
And everyone else who has given me advice and encouragement. You've enriched my trips, and keep me excited!

Stumpy: "bobbernumber3: "Aw hell... I'm gonna stay the same as I am and not pledge to be any different. I just upped my yearly contribution $5 to cover any insults or hurt feelings inflicted on others from my thoughful posts!" Wow! You must be a mean, insulting, hurtful, person of some unrecognizable gender. ;)
Go ahead.... hurt my feelings " I tend to be blunt and honest. And probably opinionated, which comes with age. I'm hoping my post would make people aware of the need to support this website financially.

Great thread to bring up yearly. We just went through a rough patch on another site. Some people like to bring contentious issues to sites about places that people go to find peace and personal renewal just to stir things up. Fortunately both that and this site have moderators that keep things on track and try to focus on promoting the forum as a place where people feel safe making comments and asking questions that will help people enjoy the areas we are discussing. Way to go everyone who helps make this site what it is. Always good to remind people we can be better.
Also, kind of sad seeing so many names of people from the past 16 years that are gone. I appreciate all that are still here to help me remember trips that have been and dream of trips still to come.

Very nicely put Kip, and thank you for the reminder. I completely agree and pledge, along with you. Everyone has an opinion, that opinion may not align with yours, but as I have grown older, I have figured out I have learned more when I listened to differing opinions rather than contesting them. Never be afraid to learn something new...

Never have because I probably will break it, still working at tempering thoughts and opinions. It's been a long process.
Mostly just want to thank Lindsey for what I consider the biggest compliment I have received. Obviously I do not read all posts often enough, so it is belated!
Never want to sound condescending, the wealth of advise that has been given here by members is something I promote and research often. I encourage others to do also because past members who have contributed may no longer be here....
Thanks!

and not just while posting here... Interesting story... My wife and I are not very religious folks. We used to be church going Roman Catholics, but for a variety of reasons, we left that organization about 30 years ago. We have been asked, "How can you teach your children to be good people when you abandon your faith?" I think we've done OK in that department.
Recently, our youngest child, now a college freshman, was presented with a situation at school that required him to make a significant choice about his future. Things were apparently happening in his chosen department that he felt were immoral and unacceptable. Now he could have made a big stink and filed grievances, etc. But he felt that doing so could injure the reputations and careers of some folks who might not have been involved. He chose to make a few quiet, private statements and then he withdrew from the program. Now he will have a significantly different career than he originally planned. He chose dignity and respect even at his expense.
I am so damn proud of that young man I could just about bust!

I have not been here in a very long time. I remember when Kip first posted this, it sure seems like so long ago in a very different time. Seeing the posts from people I used to interact with every night, especially the ones who are no longer with us... wow. Emotional.
Absolutely on board now, as then, but the squabbles that would arise from time to time, which caused Kip to post this, were so mild compared to today's world.
Hello again to all the old friends and to all of today's members. This is one great place.
