scat	08/22/2024 11:49AM   Ok, question on the classic Philly steak sandwich. To me it has to have that particular white American cheese, I have read some joints use Cheez -whiz, never had it that way and not sure I would be into it. Some places around here have no clue what it really is, put peppers & onions and the wrong kind of cheese, Philly in name only. So for the Philly cheese snob in all of us, what is the correct cheese, I like the white American cheese version myself. There is one place by me that comes close enough. Got me thru a bad head from drink more than a few times...

I am a Nemo (Losi) snob, and would also consider myself a wetfoot snob (I look down on you tiptoeing dryfooters; hopping from tipsy rock to muddy slope in a vain attempt to keep your precious boots dry.) I am writing all of this in sarcastic jest - not a true attempt to divide the ranks ;) I think snob = preference; especially when you feel your preference is the "right" one.

Trango 3 tent Snowtrekker tent CCS silnylon tarp Ostrom barrel harnesses (2) (which makes me more elite than those with 1) Ostrom Wabakimi pack Oh yes WCPP and Wab and Q snob enough other stuff that if traded in I could buy a medium Boston Whaler. Or a car.Ours are all over ten years old. See where the priorities are? :)

Back in my day when the hippies were in their vogue and I was somehow engaged in the Marine Corps at the time, I can remember how our 782 gear began changing from the old canvas material to the lighter more durable maintenance free Nylon material. You all can drop a couple C notes (plus or minus) on a paddle for example, well I'm just happy with my $10 clearance Caviness paddle. Don't get me wrong; if you can afford one of them fancy blades and you feel good about it and it makes your paddleing better well then you go for it and God bless you. Personally if I had one of those expensive blades in my hands, I would be afraid to get it wet, and that would kinda defeat the whole purpose for me. P.S. I'm coming over to your side. Looking forward to picking up a used MnII just before Wingnight up there that I purchased last fall!

I could have bought a nice light nifty new pair with Vibram soles and all at Bass Pro for $ 100. I bought a $10 bottle of Mcnett Revive-X that butthead recommended (thanks bro) to rewaterproof my same vintage Columbia rain jacket instead of buying a new $60 one. I think it worked really well, but I haven't sat in a boat for 3 hours in the rain with it yet. I did buy a Taj 3 after my TimberlineXT developed a troublesome zipper but haven't slept a night in it. Going to real soon though. Hope I like it, but I doubt I'll be real snobby about it until it gets dirty and some character and history behind it. That's what I like.

" I see nothing wrong with using gear until it is all used up. My 1991 Chevy sedan finally kicked the bucket last January. My mechanic was glad to buy it for parts! It was the only car that my kids' friends knew of that had NO CUP HOLDERS, roll down windows, and a radio with knobs!!!

I also don't like ball caps with the little plastic adjusters, or God forbid - velcro, in the back. I can tolerate a leather strap and buckle, but prefer only fitted. I guess I'm a fitted wool ballcap snob. And when I was in the army, all our gear was from good ol' natural stuff. The M16 was plastic, but I preferred a wood-stocked M14 and my trusty 1911. To heck with those puny caliber pizza pistols they got nowdays. I guess the hippies got put in charge of defense procurement somewhere along the way.

analyzer	08/20/2024 08:52PM   We've definitely become "non-cotton snobs'. (Polyester, Nylon, wool snobs). Exped rapala Trilene Leeches dry shoes in camp snobs. Such a pleasure to get out of the wet socks and shoes. I'm a solitude snob myself. Less so for the wife. Has to be steaks night one. I'm becoming a fairweather snob. Unfortunately, I'm a cold beverage snob, and those two can be a little contradictory at times. I'm definitely a partner snob. I've gotten very picky about who I go with, and who I won't go with. I guess i'm kinda of a small group snob. 2 - 4 is fine, I'm not a big fan of more than that.

scat	08/06/2024 11:54AM   That's funny, I don't think I'm a snob about anything. I have all the same gear I have had since I started doing this canoe camping thing. I made a list, bought everything I needed and haven't changed much since. I did buy a new tent to replace the leaky Taj 3 and an air mattress to replace the leaky one, but I haven't tested them out yet so not ready to be snobby about it. I just hope it doesn't leak and I'm good. I like the gear I have and I like using it and hope it's with me till I'm done tripping. I'm stubborn and not changing a thing. Oh geez, after saying all that I just realized I'm a total snob, never mind... Cheers, scat

But I would argue that anyone who has left his or her heart in the BWCA does by definition belong! And has passed the test called “nobility of character.” And is, by definition, already a member of that elite order of honorary residents of the Boundary Waters. So we are devotés and admirers not snobs, no matter what our individual eccentricities!

Life long Chicago area dude, and there is no other place to get a beef with sweet peppers hot on the side than Jays Beef on Naragansett. I live in the north suburbs now and they don’t have a clue how to make a good beef, Portillos is close, but it’s not the real deal Holyfield if you know what I mean. Jays beef - Combo with sweet & hot on the side. Nothing compares - Total Jays Beef snob. Oh man now that I said that I gotta make a run, I’m jonesin somethin bad… Cheers scat

If you are ever in Philadephia, the best Cheese Steak can be had at Jim's South Street. The bread is soft and the meat is diced to perfection, to say nothing of the melted cheese of course.

But although I like my kevlar, gore-tex etc I am an antique snob. I like split cane fly rods, Parker and Lefever shotguns, Griswold frying pans, Iverson snowshoes and any outdoor gear made of wool and/or leather. Hey, some of my stuff is even older than I am!

One time I was trying to show a Mexican painter a front door that I was trying to match the color of. He was in the pass side and the window was foggy and it took about 5 minutes before I was able to get across to him how to get the window open. He had never seen it before and was totally befuddled.

TomT	02/01/2012 07:01AM   My Border Collie (lost him 2 years ago) hated having his picture taken. He would always turn away or lay down and rest his head if you pointed a camera at him. He's giving you the "eye" pretty good in this pic. I love these dogs.

okinaw55	07/31/2024 10:44PM   Ok I'll play. I was at the time a losi snob. I even wrote a gear report about it. Since, I have been seriously disappointed with everything coming unattached. No longer use it. I was also and still am an Exped snob. I flat out wont buy anything else after the CS help I've received over the years. Im also currently a Warbonnet hammock snob.

Please note this thread dates back to 2012 and I highlighted, or bumped it to the top of the messageboard, becuase I got a kick out of the banter and seeing some old forum names, many of which are no longer with us. Back in 2012, a popular tent was the Nemo Losi 3 person, another popular tent was the Taj 3 person, and a popular canoe to own for solo canoest was the Bell Magic. Bojibob started this thread as a tongue-in-cheek, gentle self-deprecating humor, to highlight his "snobbery."
TomT	08/01/2024 06:54AM   I would say I’m a warbonnet “hammock” snob. I will buy other brand tarps, under quilts etc but am loyal to their hammock. Why? Back in 2009 I was a hammock sleeping newbie and warbonnet was just starting out I really got behind the founders DIY and authentic way of creating quality products while slowly growing his business. Much like Dan and CCS or Yvon Chouinard and Patagonia. I like the way people like this do their business. Very American. Btw, I still use my original Blackbird hammock. The zippers are still great and it’s built with quality in mind. Best sleep I ever get is in that thing.

As I've aged, I've been fortunate enough to acquire some really nice stuff. It didn't happen all at once though...I'm totally aware that people go camping and canoe tripping with what they can afford, and I can appreciate the fact that they're getting out in the woods with what they have.

OMG this made me feel really really old. I split the difference and had both a Taj and a Losi 3P. The Losi 3P bit the dust but NEMO just replaced it with a brand new OSMO Dagger 3 (yet to be used). Losi had a bit more room, but the fly delaminated and they offered to replace, so I did it. The REI Taj still going strong. I guess I'll throw my hat in as an Exped snob. Still have four Synmat 7.5s. One sprang a leak and Exped made it good as new again. Can't find anything better for the size and weight and comfort. Now using Flextail ZERO pump with them, but the pads themselves are doing great.

pastorjsackett	08/23/2024 10:07AM   I was reflecting on this upon our last trip. I find that I get snobby about great campsites. The rating and all. Then one of my traveling companions stood next to me and looked out over the water saying "They're all 5 stars." I liked that!

Paddle4Hike	09/02/2024 03:38PM   I am a wine snob. So when it comes to the BWCAW, that means finding the “best” boxed wine that I can unbox and take into the wilderness. Put that foil pouch into the lake when I start making camp, and by dinner time…..chilled grape goodness. Everything tastes better when you are in the backcountry!
