Sawbill Lake, May 2011 One of the latest ice out dates ever. During the winter we planned for a very early spring trip. It turned out winter just didn't want to let go. Snowed on our way in, mid-twenties during the nights. The water along shore would freeze over and then melt during the day. Definitely one to remember! |

quote starwatcher: "Birch Lake, early winter canoe trip. Love this photo. I have a similar one of a canoe on Lonely Lake by Gunflint. It deep winter though and the lake is froze and the canoe is upside down for the winter with several inches of snow on it. Anyway, love your photo, I hope you don't mind if I steal it and add it to my desktop slides how at work. |

Gull Creek flowing into Bald Eagle Lake Nov. 2012 This shot is looking behind me after frantically chopping ice to get out of there. I almost had to walk along the shore as the ice was almost too thick to chop with my paddle, |

quote Chilly: " Not for contest becasue it's not in the bwca, just wanted to share. " chilly...the rules state "winter in canoe country". does that mean BWCA only? looks like you could put a canoe on that water in your photo. |

quote fitgers1: "quote starwatcher: "Birch Lake, early winter canoe trip. Thanks fitgers1, you are welcome to use the photo for your desktop; I'd appreciate photo credit for any published use. Thanks. We go late fall /early winter canoeing, usually mid October and get snowed on about once every three trips. When we canoe in we usually never see a soul the entire week we are out; we have the canoe county to ourselves. Typically we shut down the park and close the gate for the season on our way out. This Birch Lake photo was taken the last night of our trip coming out of the Quetico from the Man Chain. We then encountered fierce 20/30 mph winds coming directly up from the SW up Moose and Sucker and had to fight our way out the last day. It took us eight hours to fight our way out down thru Moose and it's the first time I've broke a paddle fighting the wind and three-foot whitecaps. starwatcher |

A friend took my winter camping for the first time last winter. We went to Kawishiwi Lake for Presidents weekend. In addition to these tracks everywhere, we were treated to a pre-dawn howling show by a pack who had just apparently taken down an animal not very far from our camp. |

Old Gunflint Trail near Iron Lake, March 2012 There were two moose. Was really cool to see them in the winter. Word at Gunflint Lodge via the owner was that they were two bulls. Would have been cool to see them with their antlers. |
