I usually have a wide brimmed hat, long pants, and long sleeve shirts. The only places I apply sunscreen are my lower legs if I am wearing sandals, or the backs of my hands and lower wrists where it might get exposed while paddling or fishing. If I want to get some sun, I can roll up and button the sleeves or take off the hat for a while. Given that my head has given up a lot of it's natural protection (hair), I tend to leave the hat on a lot of the time :). I may switch to a baseball cap tho

Neutrogena Sensitive Skin 50 and Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Face. Have also used the CeraVe Face 50 and liked it. I have had several basal cell carcinomas removed because of early exposure on my skin before I knew better, and also Spartan1 is more prone to skin cancers because of his immune-suppressant medications, so sunscreen is necessary for us. We do wear long sleeves and hats with coverage when out in the sun for long periods of time also.
But these products really work for us. Have just had twelve days in the northland, lots of outdoor activities (hiking, canoeing, etc.) and no sunburn at all.

In response to HPD's post, what type of sunblock do you use?
I have been using Bullfrog gel, and it works great. It is not at all messy, and goes on very well. Pretty waterproof, too.
I think its one of the best brands out there.

some "sport" version spf 30. the big tube came with a little one on a caribiner. nice and handy.

I used the bullfrog brand last year. It was the spray on type and it did well for us. I liked the bug repellant aspect of it also.

Since there are no coral reefs in MN I am pretty sure there will not be any sunblock rules in the future…but who knows for sure.
With that said my dermatologist suggests only zinc oxide products so certain version sunbum or blue lizard for me right now.

I use a waterproof SPF 30. I don't which brand. Whatever the store has. I use it on my ears, nose, and cheek bones mostly. I wear long pants, short sleeve shirt, and a hat. I don't worry about my arms or hands, though I often wear paddling gloves.
I also put on some lip balm that has sun block in it.

Waterproof SPF 30.
Anyone know how long a tube is good for?? I think the tube I have in my thwart bag is at least 5 years old-do you think it is still effective? Going in Spring and fall and mainly when it is raining has not seen me using much sunscreen in recent years.

Badger SPF 30+ sunblock. Not messy and OK in the waterproof department. When the banana boat guys were monkey butt red the missus and I were just starting to get some color. No complaints about the protection, just the price tag.

I use Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry Touch sunblock SPF 45 for my face, neck and hands and usually wear long sleeves and pants to protect arms and legs. It's pricey (about $9 for a small tube) but it's the best non-greasy sunblock that I've ever found.
bogwalker--I've heard sunblock is only supposed to be effective for a year, but I've used stuff that was a couple of years old and it seemed to work ok... five years old might be pushing it tho ;)

We use SPF 30 or SPF 50 and both seem to work well. The downside is when it's applied on the forehead and runs into the eyes when it gets really hot out (it burns)! Wear a hat. Also the fish don't like the taste of it so don't apply it with your hands then touch your lures or bait, catching fish will come to an abrupt end.

I've been trying to get away from using sunscreen so much and started going with wearing long-sleeved shirts made from Supplex. Very light and very comfortable on all but the hottest days.

The gel based sunscreens (like bullfrog) are friendlier to acne prone skin. I use No Ad number 45 (or somewhere aroung there) for kids.

I used 45 or 50 spf spray on stuff on my last trip. Easy application, doesn't really slow you down rubbing it in.
The gel stuff also rubs in really easily, that is some good stuff too.

For a long time I have used Coppertone Sport SPF 48. Worked great for tennis, biking, fishing. Last summer a skin specialist recommended Neutrogena Sunblock Lotion with similar or higher SPF and I've been using that ever since.

Any SPF that is 30+ and which is also water/sweat resistant...there is none that is completely waterproof.

Coppertone Sport SPF 15. I call it "liquid shirt". It's very good water/sweatproof department which is what I like most about it. No SPF level will help if it washes off. I don't burn real easily and can stay out all day at SPF 15. They make it in SPF 30 too if you burn more easily.

Prior to going to Australia, skin cancer capital of the world, we were advised by travel literature to get new sun block for the trip. Also, some products, such as the Coppertone Sport Sunblock Spray I am looking at now, have expiration dates. This one says 09/04....Ouch!

There are quite a few reports questioning the efficacy of sunscreens that don't block both UVA and UVB in preventing cancer and wrinkles. I used to use regular Bullfrog gel but now, in light of the aforementioned reports, I use Bullfrog with TiO2 or other sunscreens with Parsol.
I've lived outdoors all my life (fishing, lifeguard, geologist)and have used sunscreen faithfully for 20 of my 37 years. Unfortunately, I've had "suspicious" moles removed recently and the skin on my arms really shows the sun damage. I now consider myself a certified heliophobe.

Anthelios SX with Mexoryl is the sunblock that you can only get
in Canada and Europe..for some reason the FDA has been sitting
on this for quite awhile and it's not approved for sale here yet.

I'll use an SPF 30 or 45 on my face/ears, but I rely more on a hat with a 4" brim, a longsleeved sunblocking shirt, and long pants. The clothing doesn't ever sweat off or rub off and helps discourage biting insects. I make sure to confirm that the sunblock garments remain effective when wet; some types do not.
