i took my w/c canoe on about a half dozen bwca trips before i put a tag on it. even being super careful you'll end up putting scratches in it, then it won't matter so much. (i never worried about getting stopped)

How come this stuff is happening on my anniversary week? There is like three different things going on.

I am curious about the gathering, as there was minimal information on the link.
Will there be any "gathered" meals like everyone bring a little something, or are we to take care of all our own individual needs throughout the entire weekend?
I understand the setting, there were just very few details.
Or is the entire thing sort of freelance with no structure?

I asked about that at a wooden canoe seminar. Seems some folks will use a magnetic sticker (obviously, you would need something ferrous on the inside of the boat to make that work...) that can subsequently be removed... I agree, some of those boats are just too pretty for numbers.

Ya' just have to get over it and do it.
Wouldn't you rather be on the water?

Karl

I watched your build of the NW Merlin (nice job). I am looking forward to seeing the canoe in person. I will be bringing my Merlin. I built mine from the 1985 Bruce Kunz design....... a design that has a flat keel line (with no keel) and very scant rocker. I will be very interested in taking yours for a spin.

I am still trying to "connect" my body to the Merlin. I am sure that I am not paddling that canoe efficiently....... maybe someone will give me some pointers on the fine art of solo paddling :)

I agree. I built mine to paddle. Ive hauled dead deer in it, firewood, several tripping trips. Bridged her once on a log in a river. I have patched her numerous times, put several scratches in her. This will be my first trip into the buondary waters. Ya just gotta ride em hard and put em away wet. I love spending the winter sanding her all down and re varnishing her skin.

It is a small gathering and the event is freelance. Saturday there is a group paddle-about (if you desire). Sunday is a play day with all the boats in the bay.

Last year I was camped on Crescent Lake and by the time I arrived on Saturday, I could not find anyone at the Sawbill Landing (they were still on their paddle). I came back later in the day, found wooden boats and talked to the owners. On Sunday, I got to Sawbill about 10 AM and had a great day trying other canoes and getting a few tips on Canadian Style paddling from Sue Plankis.

This year I plan on camping at Sawbill rather than Crescent

Thanks for that info.
I, too, will be camping at Sawbill. It'll be my first time there.
I'm going to get there mid-day on Friday and maybe get a line wet somewhere.
See you there.

I think you'all missed my point? I DO paddle her but don't want that ugly MN sticker on this boat. I will probably paddle her in MN next summer on our planned trip in the BWCAW, so I guess eventually I'll get over defacing her with the sticker?

Too many things going on in the next 2 months this year, but I thought I might try to squeeze a quick trip up north in? But there's just no way. Will this be an annual gathering with the same weekend of September NEXT year? I would love to come.

There will be a 3rd Annual Sawbill Landing Wooden Canoe Gathering
September 26-27, 2015. More information can be found on the Stewart River Boatworks home page. I went last year with my Prospector Ranger and plan to go this year with my Merlin.

Gosh, I'd sure like to attend that. I've been struggling with the thought of wanting to bring my Pal to MN, but feel putting a the license sticker on my baby would be sacrilegious? She's just too pretty for an ugly sticker IMHO?
