I know there have been threads with older maps on them before, but the pics of these maps have mostly been deleted by the people that originally posted them, I'm looking for some maps dating back to the logging days possibly by fisher, or the forest service, around the #lakes region that possibly have older portages shown on them. Thanks!

Of course I am aware of that, however, it is sometimes a fun side trip to find the landing, and hike a few yards back into the woods.

Any other areas you need old maps for?

I did the same with our recently completed trip through Sterling, & the posted maps were invaluable in locating the old portages.
While the old portages aren't maintained & can vanish in a swamp or blowdown, even the faint paths are a whole lot better than whacking through the bush. The most difficult part is actually finding where the portage starts. Once you've found it, you should be golden.

This is a Fisher Map #113 from 1952...is this what you were looking for?

Good map!
Any Fisher map from 1958 back will show you the locations of the resorts, logging camps, old homesteads, railroad grades, and logging roads.
They start disappearing once the Wilderness Act of 1964 kicked in.
Then everything just evaporated, gone.
David Copperfield must have had a relative working for the Forest Service:)

Wow. Great map. I've saved it for future reference.

Just be aware that those older portages no longer exist. They get grown over from disuse and no maintenance.

The book of small scale maps by Fisher shows alot of the old portages and logging roads.
TerraServer, Google Earth, and the MN DNR topo maps also show some of this stuff. You can actually pick out some of the old logging roads on Google Earth Sat. images.
