I have a Snowtrekker tent and Kni-co stove . They are very popular among the winter camper crowd, and made over in Wisconsin by a guy named Duane. You can easily find lots of Youtube videos about them. With 7 oz canvas they are smaller and lighter than most wall tents, but still big. Mine's I think 25 lbs plus about 20 for the stove - insanely heavy by summer tent standards - so it means one extra carry across the portage for me but when you sit in that dry, hot air you won't mind the extra carry. The model I chose is bigger than I need. It feels like a mobile cabin. There are several places to rent them on the website.
A much lighter weight option to consider is made by Cooke Custom Sewing. Dan uses 1.1 oz silnylon so it will obviously pack much smaller and weigh much less. I have not used one, but like everything he makes you can assume its top quality.

I'm going in at Stanton Bay and crossing to probably Buckingham or possibly Art, but there isn't a great campsite on Art. Might have to bushwhack one...

Something that will be real different from your June trip to your October trip is day length. In June you have about 16 hours of sun and very long morning and evening twilight periods. In October that will be about 11 hours of sun and very short, abrupt twilight.
For fall trips I plan on way more time in camp and bring a chair, extra book, extra batteries for lights and firewood tools that I usually don't bother with on early summer trips. I cook breakfast in the dark and watch the sunrise and cook dinner in dark after sunset. Busy things to occupy dark time.

I may just go back to knife since Im a little familiar with it. Heard plenty of grouse drumming. A few burns around to hunt but besides the hunting I just wanna get back out after I catch up on work.

Insula Lk would be fun to basecamp on. Day trips down the Kawishiwi River and you can visit Alice which does very well for walleye and has some spectacular beaches.

Not so much a place as an idea, but for an October fish/hunt trip you might look into hot tenting. I got my hot tent thinking of winter, but was amazed how much I loved it in Ocober and November. I never want to crawl into my 3 season tent damp and cold again. Nothing like walking into your tent, having all your gear bone dry, and going to sleep toasty and waiting for the cool air to creep in. Even for my last trip in May, I thought about how nice a lighter weight hot tent would be in that cold, windy wet weather.

Only the southern portion of Insula was burned. The estern side has the beach camp sites - or, are the pics of the Alice beach site-east side you mentioned as a day trip??

I'm going for nine nights the first week of September. I'm heading out of Pickerel and down through McDougal to Veron. Then I'll loop back up through Fred and Olifaunt to hopefully ride a nice tailwind on Pickerel to the car.

So I just finished my first trip in the BWCA. I just can't wait another year so I'm thinking about an early oct trip when the fishing picks up again and I can possibly pursue some grouse and Rabbits. i'll definitely basecamp and would prefer no more than a long day of travel. Looking for any suggestions of places you think may fit some of this criteria?
