I pack for both my son and I and I usually bring 2 full rolls. If my wife goes (she hasn't in over a decade) I would need to fill a CCS rucksack.

I use compressed tissue for backpacking. I plan to use it for canoe tripping also. Versatile, can be used for TP or any number of other tasks. Being compressed, it doesn’t take up much room and is easy to unroll with the help of a little water. It’s made of biodegradable rayon so it’s tougher than TP, holds up when wet and yet is environment friendly.

Never heard of it - got a link, Mike?

I always over pack tp. Would rather run out of food...!

Yep, the one item I always bring way too much and am fine with it. I store one roll in my day-pack and another under the vestibule of my tent each and every night. First thing in the am it comes in handy and I always know where it is, esp in the Q where it takes some time and effort to "prepare" since their are no latrines.

Solo usage, a small package of handiwipes. I'm fresh as a daisy all day long!

I count on 1 roll per person per 5 days. This may sound excessive, but I cannot recall having anything other than a partial roll at the end of a trip. At some point a few years back, I tracked my usage at home and then factored in some extra. In the boy scouts, we called it AP (all purpose) paper. That has rang true on more than one occasion.
As Frenchy19 noted, I would rather run out of food.

This may be what WiMike was referring to. Compressed TP

Two to three weeks before a trip I start obsessing over finding the perfect roll. I'll closely monitor both bathrooms at our house, and when one of them has a roll that is almost exactly 2/3 full I grab it, since in my mind a full roll is too much, and a half roll just doesn't seem safe. I place mine in a gallon Ziploc bag along with a small baggie of the "flushable" wipes and a small tube of hand sanitizer. This system has served me well for a number of years.

Can add just a touch of water to seam and unpeel it dry or soak it a bit and have a wet wipe. They are not treated or medicated, just tough tissue.

Interesting topic. To add a slightly different twist, I usually don't take much (unless my girls or wife are along). The radical change in diet usually plugs me up good for 4-5 days, so sometimes a short trip might be over before I need TP. Still take two rolls, though!

I'm doing quite well BH. Finally gave up the PSYOP job for a nice cushy medical unit posting. I've heard stories over the years about these Med units, but had no idea they actually rival the shenanigans on MASH.

I have a friend who has a house in Arizona with a guest house in the back yard. When you go to visit, he gives you a roll of TP when you arrive. You are free to stay until the roll is gone...

What a bunch of tenderfoots. God gave you hands with opposable thumbs for a reason. Haven't used toilet paper in nearly 15 years. Geesh.....

Surely a result of years in heathen hinterlands, and a reasonable fear of IED's.

Thanks for the information and link, Mike. It's a lot cheaper if you buy 500 . . .

TomT: "I wonder what the voyageurs used ......" Reindeer lichen, birtch bark, and Basswood leaves - and anyone who hasn't used them doesn't deserve to call themselves an outdoorsman.
This thread makes me want to go over to the mining thread in search of pleasant conversation.

I agree that everyone on a trip must be responsible for their own supply, with one slight difference.
If one person runs out (which I have done) other members of the group should share their supply...otherwise someone winds up using Charmin of the North. A very common plant along trails to the Forest Toilet - again, which I have also done, more than once.
It is the broad leafed plant growing low to the ground in the following photo

Those who take rolls - how big a roll is that? There are bigger and smaller rolls.

One roll for a weeks use, flattened out in a zip lock.,and some wipes for that extra fresh feeling

I pack light, but this is one of the rare items I'd much rather have too much of, than not enough.

I have a half roll in my main pack ( in a zip lock) for camp use. I have a smaller roll in my thwart bag for traveling. Then, burried deep in the main pack is another partial roll that has been vacuumed sealed for emergencies.I

I use it. I take a lot. No, I don't share mine. You're responsible for yours. I may sell VERY limited quantities of mine at exorbitant prices, but even this is not guaranteed. Plan accordingly.
What about you?

I have assorted small rolls (maybe 5?) scattered in my packs. The one I'm using will always be in the top flap of my small pack. I double baggie them. Soon I'll start keeping an eye on the rolls in the house and when they reach an appropriate size I'll snag 'em and bag 'em for the trip.
We must be getting close to running out of topics.... I never thought I would say this but I'm looking forward to triple portaging 3 lighter loads vs. doubling 2 heavy ones this year.

So, nobody has a formula . . . ? Like, 8 sheets per day X 17 days = 136 X 2 packs = 272 sheets + one day pocket pack = 280 sheets! plus 1 "diarrhea disaster roll" !! and what is lighter - a roll of TP or x number of Immodium? ;)
|
boonie
|
TomT-
Lighter loads are nice, portaging will be easier and more enjoyable, possibly a little safer too. Lighter, smaller packs are easier to manage at landings, especially the awkward ones. Enjoy yourself!

Just as a tip - I too carry a few stashes of TP here and there for obvious uses. The main one is safe in a 1 pound plastic can of Folgers coffee. This is placed right at the beginning of the path to the latrine. It's always in sight and always protected from the elements. Pick it up on the way and return it to this pre-determined spot on return. That way it won't be forgotten when time to move camp. Place a small bottle/tube of hand sanitizer in the tube.

TP is the only;y thing I over-package, doing individual days in a separate vac sealed bags with extras. When a home use roll gets to less than a 1/2 inch of paper to the core, remove from use, pull the core, vac bag it flat, about the size of a thin wallet. Start with, ends up as,

Some of you guys are really anal about this topic. ;-)
I don’t over think it. Usually 3 partial rolls in different places.
