I use and like the big bourquinn pads. I think having the boat ride higher up on the shoulders helps with climbing and descending steep hills for tipping the canoe.

Hmm, I guess I'll be the odd man out here, because I like the Chosen Valley sling pads and they're what I use most of the time on my solo. I've never noticed them digging into my shoulders. I wonder if it's because I'm not a big person?
I also have one of the Bell slide on yokes for cane seats. It's really fast to put on and take off, but the pads that came with it were hard as rock. I replaced them with more supple foam pads and fine it acceptable, but don't use it much because I prefer paddling my Magic with the sliding tractor seat and this yoke only works with the cane seat.
Finally I have a pretty standard clamp on yoke with Bourquin pads. It 's comfy, but I find I just prefer the sling pads.

I'm confused on this one since contour pad is an inch of foam glued to plastic base. How come that foam is capable of digging into anything?

It's not the foam that digs, its the composite that holds it.
I'm not a particularly large human but my shoulders are substantial.

I bought a Wenonah solitude and was wondering what is best way to mount a portage pad. I own 3 tandem canoes but am unsure what is best way to mount and what to use. Canoe is Kevlar and only ways 33 pounds. Would like to start doing single portages. Any ideas ? Thanks

I consider the Hidden River Contour pads and the Choosen Valley Sling pads instruments of torture. The edges of the contour pads dig into flesh in front of my collar bones as do the metal supports on the sling pads. Like Butthead I favor the big rectangular pads; just not built for the shaped ones.

I too prefer the rectangular pads to the sling pads.

There are a couple of different clamp on style yokes for solo canoes. You can see both on the Wenonah website. The one pictured by butthead is the one I've been supplied with rentals. Each style has its proponents.

I like the control of Hidden River contoured pads . They are available both in clamp-on and bolt-on styles. With clamp-on model you can play how to position them to your liking or re-adjust individually if there are multiple persons carrying the canoe. There's a drawback that pads' foam is not protected by any cloth, so one has to be careful when loading a canoe on one's shoulders so not to rip the foam.
