Had one bad night sleep due to worry about bears, which was basically all in my head. My campsite had a strange odor--as though fish guts were buried nearby or there was a decomposing animal nearby. I walked around a bunch trying to pinpoint where the smell was coming from, but I never did find out. This made me worry that a bear was going to pay a visit in the night, and my sleep was fitful. Nighttime in the tent is not my favorite part of soloing. Got super dehydrated one day. It was humid but overcast, and I failed to drink enough water. Felt like doo doo the better part of an afternoon until my re-hydrating efforts kicked in. My solo paddle stroke is loud! Lots of J-stroke correction at the tail end. Mice were out in force. My barrel had mouse turds on top, and in the middle of cooking dinner one evening a mouse was weaving in and out of the fireplace rocks. Two out of three days when breaking down camp, I was approached by groups and asked if I was leaving. Site was claimed before I even left. Lots of sap. On hands from tarp, on crazy creek from sitting on ground, etc. Sitting under CSS tarp as rain pattered down was wonderful. I want to try hammock camping, which seems like a soloist dream. Winds from the East or no wind at all, which was the opposite of my other trips this summer. Sailboat putting in on East Bearskin as I departed. Appeared to be a cabin owner. Something I've not seen before. Trail Center burger as good as ever. It's been a pretty good BWCA summer for me, albeit short trips: May: 3 night trip with my son. June: 3 night solo. July: 3 night trip with my brother. August: 3 night solo. |
