come to Maine.. Ontario is on lockdown till at least the end of May. The parks fee is ergo now kind of irrelevant.. So in short F...U.. Ontario Parks."

That's probably where my son's long trip with Camp Menogyn might end up. They usually go up to Wabakimi or other, but looking like that is definitely off the table. Best suggestions for a 27-29 day trip for 4 teenage boys (17-18 yo) and one counselor?

I'm not sure if Americans writing to Canada elected officials would make much impression. But there's a petition on Change.org that can be signed by anyone:

Thanks for the link Lawrence. This is the reason I quit paddling in Ontario years ago. I would encourage everyone who has a stake in this to write or call the appropriate Canadian officials. Never underestimate the effects of a grass roots effort. Case in point, the Michigan legislatures decision to make registration of canoes and kayak a law. This was many years ago. We organized a rebellion, encouraged paddlers to write hundreds of letters, staged a protest on the capitol steps ( peaceful ). They dropped the proposal like a hot potato. More recently ,a commission recommended the fee and registration again. So we started to give the government a refresher course in " we the people". They couldn't disentangle themselves quickly enough from the commissions recommendation. You can make a difference, just don't be complacent. Their exorbitant fees will raise no money if nobody comes.

Ontario's closed and for a good reason in my opinion. Thanks for the invitation! I've been to Maine once on a shortish Penobscot trip. It was nice, but for me - no comparison to wide non-linear areas like Algonquin and especially Temagami, where one can travel for weeks changing route at a whim of the moment. Ontario price hike is beyond reason, of course. Even more, beyond reason is a relatively passive response of the camping community.

I'm driving to BWCA, even if it takes 2 days one-way. Don't see any alternative.

Kevin Callan talked about this in his Q&A yesterday afternoon. From what I gathered, it was the provincial government's efforts to recoup lost revenues from this past year. Parks are apparently their own cost (revenue) centers. I thought it was only for certain provincial parks? If it's for all of them, it'll be time to look into Manitoba's Atikaki and other parks in that region.

Consider undertaking a major piece of North Forest Canoe Trail. Start around Connecticut River and head to Fort Kent Maine. (How did this end up in Solo Tripping?)

Thanks for the link as well. I signed the petition. If Quetico fees get jacked as much as the parks north of Toronto, as a soloist I will not be able to afford to go anymore.

Here is the link for the new fee schedule (this was also linked in the video referenced above): 2021 Fee Schedule

It shows 2021 fees for Quetico as well as other locations in Ontario.

It's only for a couple at the moment, but if it's extended . . .

I can't imagine they'll net additional income from it. If they raise it like that to other places I'm planning a long solo, they won't be getting it, nor will the businesses get any of the money I spend getting there and back, and while I'm there.

Interesting situation since I am mostly a Canadian side paddler (I am a Wisconsin resident). A buddy and I had a three week trip planned last year in Manitoba. I am hoping the fee increases don't spread.

Also, Wisconsin's legislature has considered a registration fee on paddle craft several times in the past and a popular outcry has caused it to be dropped. I wouldn't be surprised if it comes up again.

This was put in place last April and the plans laid long before Covid. I've known about this for a year. Just surprised this is the first we're really hearing people complain.

I am glad that Quetico just simply raised fees for everyone(especially Americans). It really is getting expensive, but I would find a way. Maybe I'll have to come out of retirement and build a few paddles or one canoe every year to pay my fees.

The flat fee for campsite I see at other parks is really unfair to solos, but I'll bet that arrangement hasn't changed. Just a fee increase as well.

I think we're just closer to the time that we actually may get back up north so now those of us on the US-side are paying more attention to fee structures and the like.

not yet I imagine not too many from the Midwest go to Massassauga and Temagami.

Too many other PP in between.

The rest of the Ontario fee structure is just normal price increases.

According to officials, Temagami's price hike is just a pilot program before extending this scheme province-wide.

Oh I am aware of that. It has to be fixed to something more equitable ,but for 2021 assuming you can get over the border your closer PP to you midwesterners are not affected.
