The wife and I did a 10 day loop in late August that included a stretch from Frost Lake to Little Sag. traveling east to west. We met a few groups on the river even though it was low and the beavers had done their best to make the river impassable. The lone camp site on Bologna Lake was taken by a young group moving faster than us, so we went on to Afton Lake, which we had all to ourselves. Tough day - because of a rainy day on Frost Lake, everything we had was wet by the time we arrived at Afton. This would be a good layover lake, but I wasn't sure if there was any good fishing in Afton, so we went on the next day to Mora. I'd like to do the Frost again by myself in September or October, lighter and fishing more often. There were more people than we expected to see, and with only one campsite on Bologna and nothing more until Afton, it makes for a less leisurely trip. The river is beautiful and the fall colors would make for even more terrific scenery.

I have indeed read Kanoes report. I'm a bit more curious about the popularity of the area, versus the actual route. I'm intending on getting to Frost Lake around the fifth day of my trip. If I were a betting man, I'd guess there won't be many, if any people around. But, if someone knows something that I don't, and there is some sort of yearly pilgrimage to the Frost River that time of year, I will adjust my route accordingly. Thanks for the trip report heads up. I have a few quiet days to concentrate on important things, a.k.a. paddling, now that Ramadan has ended. The bad guys are busy doing their Eid stuff, instead of trying to rid the world of us.

I've had a few quiet days as of late, and I think I've got my welcome back to MN trip fairly well planned. I'll be paddling 2 areas I have not been into, but have wanted to. The first being the Frost River. Typically in late May/early June, how busy do you suspect it will be? The other area I'll be paddling through, is Little Sag and its suburbs. I'm pretty darn excited. Only 8 or so more months. I wonder how many times I'll change my trip between now and then?

Kanoes did a solo through Frost River and has a nice trip report on it if you haven't seen it. You can go to the Trip Reports an sort by member name (Kanoes) or the entry point (Sawbill).

I had the same concern and came to the conclusion that the Frost River is spoken of more on this board because these/us canoeists are more serious and do go into the remote areas more often. Doubt you will see to much in the way of rookies down that route. I plan on going in May as well, but earlier May.

A couple months late, but...
In late May/early June, you'll likely see people on Frost Lake, but you'll likely have the river to yourself. Frost Lake is a somewhat popular destination, especially with fisherman, but the Frost River is not heavily traveled.

I did the Frost river in the mid 80's and we spent the night on Balogna Lake which is approx half way down the river. It's about as remote as you can get in the BW. If you like to fish, there are nice northerns in there too.

Thanks for asking the Frost River question, it reminds me that I should write a long-overdue report! I would think you might see someone on Frost Lake, but not between there to Little Sag. When I went, later in the summer, I believe I met one couple coming the other direction and I passed one group stopped for lunch as I went from Frost to Koma(?). On Frost, there was no one there when I arrived just after noon and I only saw one other canoe late in the day. The river was very interesting and the solitude was about as good as it gets in the BW. Also, there is one of the toughest short portages you will find. (Little Sag. on the other hand was quite busy the half day and next morning I was there.) Great area for seeing moose! Hope you have a great trip and file a report next year. --Goose
