Sawbill, do the Lady Chain all the way to Hazel. There is an amazing cascade where the Phoebe flows out of Hazel. The fishing along that route is quite good as well.

I can't decide! I like Sawbill, either through Beth and Grace or up through Cherokee. I have been liking the Gunflint lately. What about 62? Cowdoc's East Bearskin looks good as well. I'm conflicted. I might have to give it some time.

Last Sept I went in East Bearskin, too - a last minute switch from the western side of Gunflint due to the Pagami Creek wildfire. There's some nice country there - Alder, Pierz, Canoe, Crystal, Pine, etc. I wish I had hit Spaulding, too. If you go from E. Bearskin to Alder, DON'T take the portage out of the north arm, take the southern route.
I'm planning to go in #50, Cross Bay, in late Sept. and out to Poplar. Rockwood will shuttle me to #50, and I'll just paddle back to their place. Bear Bait was in that area last fall and got some gorgeous photos of tamaracks. You might want to check out his trip report if you haven't already done so.

Spend the night before at Sawbill campground, pick up the canoe, have them run you to EP37 Kawishiwi Lake, paddle the Lady Chain back to Sawbill. Nice trip, good mix of river and lake paddling. Or from Sawbill outfitters to Baker Lake, the Temperance Lakes, Cherokee and back south to Sawbill. Should be pretty quiet on either at the end of Sept. Sawbill is a very convenient jumping off point, the campground is very nice, and the outfitter is right there.

Assuming solo? Fishing a priority or not?
Personally, I want to trip from bower trout and loop almost back to the ep through ram lake and do the short hike/ possible bike ride back to bower. It might be more of a 6 day route though depending on whether and how much you like to travel.
Beautiful country there through the misquah hills. I've been through large sections of this route, gaskin, horshoe, vista, misquah, ram, brule, vernon. All are worthy lakes to paddle again. And I would really like to see winchell and swan.

Thanks for the replies gents. I'll be more specific. I'll be renting a boat so an ep close to an outfitter would be nice. Also, some fishing will be done but it is not the main focus. Last fall I wet a line for a total of two hours in three days. Photography, scenery and solitutde are what I'm most intrested in.
