How long are you going to be in Frenchy and what's your route plan?

When I'm on a long solo I always try to keep the whole food, food prep, kitchen thing as light and simple as possible.

When I solo - I find I always overpack on food - even when I deliberately pack much less. My appetite just changes. Lots of nuts and dried fruit. Powerbars or such - some meat and cheese, that's about it.

Just returned from my first trip with a solo canoe (with two others in a tandem), and I am leaving again next Monday for a Tuesday entry into LIS all alone! I am excited and nervous, and a bit stressed out about planning meals. I am used to eating like a king on group trips, but I want to travel light for this one...

I have a week planned, and I am heading up through Little Loon/north; I do not have a specific route planned after that. I hope to find some good fishing (which I should, if trips past in that area are any indicator) and am just curious to see what's it's like to be alone on a trip.

IBFLY-I agree on the nuts/dried fruit/etc., and I am also sure I will overpack the food on this trip.

amhacker22-I always repack into freezer bags, and I hope to God I can get everything to fit into one vault!

That's a really nice area. I looped around south of LLC and out EP #16, and it was one of my favorite trips even though the weather was challenging.

It will be an interesting experience for you, especially if you don't normally do many things by yourself.

Like IBFLY, I find I don't eat as much as I think. That's especially true the first few days. Even after several solos I still usually bring some food out, but it's not as bad as it used to be. All that extra weight to carry all week :). But we don't want to starve to death ;).

I just use dehydrated foods that you add water to and eat out of the bag. Light, quick, easy, no clean up, no extra kitchen gear, extra fuel, etc. I have those for breakfast and dinner, then ProBars and trail mix for lunch and snacks.

Have fun! I'll be interested to hear about your experience and how everything works out for you.

Nice!

I just finished my first pseudo-solo. I went in myself for a few days and met up with the group later. It was great! I tried to get all my food into one bear vault, and I found I could get a lot more dried food to fit if I took it out of the foil bags and put it into a freezer bag. I would then split the meals when I ate. I was able to fit enough to eat well for about 4 days, and maybe well enough for 7. I might just get a 2nd barrel for next time.

Have a blast Frency! Hope you get into some fish and some solitutde. Let me know if you want to try out that hammock. I too found that I ate very little while solo compared to group trips.

Thanks, Dan! I do want to try the hammock, but I am not sure if a solo trip is the best time to try it. I am probably taking too much food, but I guess that's better than the alternative. Enjoy the summer, and I hope you get a trip in real soon.

Congrats, and have fun! To much food is ok. You never know when you decide to take a layover, and then you may want to cook and extra "noon meal" that you normally didn't plan. I always throw in a half box of mac and cheese for a "extra meal" I cut up some beef sticks and add them for protein. It is a nice extra meal.
Anyway, can't wait to hear how it all goes. Go at your pace and take care.

Thanks, Paul! Excited and nervous, and I have enough food to feed myself for about 17 weeks. That's okay, though, I love to cook and eat. If I happen to catch any fish, My weight load will never drop!
