I posted a question on the trip planning forum about going from EP 23 into Jackfish Bay and back up the Horse River to Horse and Fourtown in late August. I found out that Jackfish was motor, and that put me off. Now I am considering a route down the Horse River, bang a left and wind up in Friday Bay, then Papoose/Chippewa/Niki/Wagosh and into Gun. Other than the 300 rod portage with 100 ft climb, any thoughts from those of you with lots more experience than I (and that's most of you!). I'm 66, but in good shape, and plan to single portage (probably not the 300-rodder). Somehow fishing is not as important as tripping on this entry.
Thanks, Joe

A nice fairly easy and straight-forward route. The Horse (especially the top of it) can get boney if it's dry. The three hundred rod portage is just a long, slow climb and a slightly (but not by much) quicker drop- good trail the whole way. Toughest portages of the trip are the ones in and out of Mudro (from Fourtown and into Sandpit).

I agree Jan. I was referring to the three portages from Fourtown to Mudro as a whole, even the last of the three into Mudro has difficult parking and rocky footing.
