I used my gopro camera to get this shot. I had it mounted on my thwart. It's actually a still from a short video I made.

Where do you find a beach like that in the Bdub?
|
HansSolo

You are correct about the beach location Banksiana!
All the pictures in my initial reply are from several recent Quetico solo trips, and the beach photo was in fact taken on Sturgeon Lake. (I'm fairly certain kanoes' picture was taken there as well, albeit with different water levels.)
The sandy peninsula lies on the southeast shore of Sturgeon Lake, about mid-way between the mouth of the Maligne River and Scripture Island.
Latitude:48.45705 Longitude:-91.63475
Aside from the expansive beach, there's a huge amount of open space under the small pines for camping, and almost unlimited tent pads. If there was ever a location in Quetico that could host a canoe camper's "kegger", this would be the spot. (A few more pictures below)
I saw only one other paddler, (a solo tripper in an old, brown Sawyer "Goldenglass" Summersong), while paddling and camping on Sturgeon Lake when I took these pictures on a September 2013 solo trip. During the peak summer months though, you can bet there would be many visitors to this location.
Unfortunately, the were several row boats stacked towards the back of the site, which I assume were cached by the First Nations' guides.
Pickerel Lake and Quetico Lake also have some notable sand beaches. The only sand beaches that I can recall seeing in the BWCAW would be on Frost Lake, Alice Lake, some on Seagull Lake, and a few other lakes that I can't think of right now.
My apologizes for the thread deviation, but I wanted to address the beach question.
Now back to more solo pictures!

My guess is that both would be on Sturgeon in the Q.

Here are a few pics. North Carolina last weekend, overnight solo in Merchant Millpond state park.
A couple Alaska pic's of solo last year. I'm leaving for Anchorage tomorrow. Hope to be canoeing soon. Some of the big lakes on the Kenai Pinnisula never froze this winter, due to the 2nd warmest winter on record.
Last one is North Carolina again, campsite on the lake. Rented canoe.

Sometimes there's days like this. My last three solos I had challenging weather on the first couple of days then beautiful days for the rest of the trip. If I had a choice this is the way I would want it. My last extremely bad weather trip was in 2007. This pic is day one in Sept. 2013. Luna was a good soldier.

What kind of pack is that on your pup and how do you like it?
|
Solobob1
|
The pack is from RUFFWEAR, it is called the Palisades pack. I really like it a lot. It connects to a vest and the bags are removable. It has two water bladders I use for flotation. So even when my dog's pack is full for travel, he still floats. I love the pack, it is durable and fits well.

Very cool stuff.
