All, thanks for the advice. I think I'll check the weather just before leaving the EP and, unless it looks pretty bad, go with the tarp only.
Great forum. Just sorry it has taken me all these years to find it.

quote Buster: "Rolling the dice..I was on a short 3 day solo the 2nd week of October last year and the weather was miserable...windy...snow showers and cold..I was happy to have a tent...on the other hand a well set up tarp would work as well.. Have fun"
Sounds like a winter camper's dream. Okay, maybe not the wind. :-)

the bugs may be gone, but the wind replaces it as the enemy, a cold damp or wet wind
I like to wait until just after the first frost, then it is hammock time (no bug screen)

You can get some really cold (upper 30's), wet (very heavy rain), and windy (20mph with stronger gusts) weather that will challenge you to stay dry and warm. If choosing between a smaller or larger tarp, I'd take the bigger one and plenty of stakes. Campsite selection will be important also.

Not crazy at all. I sometimes take a 9 x 11 cat cut tarp in the shoulder seasons. Comfortable, compact and lightweight.

Not crazy but you will have to pitch your tarp somewhat low to block inclement weather. I would suggest a cheap/light bivy for the bag as well. Then you just have to worry about bugs but a head net will take care of that.
If you have never slept outside under a tarp or in a bivy it's quite enlightening. You really feel exposed. Amazing how a tiny sliver of fabric makes one have a false sense of security.
Go for it and have fun.

Been considering just a 10x10 tarp for shelter on a mid-October trip. About 5 nights. Big weight savings vs. my tent. No insects. No partner along to complain if it doesn't work well. Crazy?

Not crazy at all. My concern would be snow more than bugs but a late wet/warm period can breed a final hungry batch... I would have a backup shelter in my vehicle and decide just before heading in.

I do it often. I also bring a bivy sack just in case.
