Alan,

That is a very nice looking craft. How many have you built and what is the design?

I looked through the solo pic post, and I didn't see a single homemade canoe!
Just wondering.
Pics of course please !

Thanks, John. My 7th stripper is in progress now and I've built one full composite hull with another one 75% done. The designs are my own. The one pictured above was built with the intention of taking me and my dog down the full length of the Bloodvein River and then turning around to paddle back upstream to the put-in. We successfully completed the task in 30 days last summer. I was so happy with the design that I built a carbon/kevlar version over the winter and we plan to do an even longer trip this summer; downstream and back again of course.

16.5' long x 30" wide. Lots of flare above the waterline in the bow for shedding waves and to give the dog enough room in front of the pack.

Nice, canoe - what plans did you use?

Thanks. I started with the NW Canoe Merlin design. I increased the size by 3.8% to make it a 38 Special. I modified the bow and stern to get rid of some of the rocker, and used the Canoecraft method with the end stems rather than the NW Canoe method.

Beautiful! I wish I had the skill and patience to craft something like that.

I always said my Bell Magic was the one canoe I'd never part with. Then I started designing and building my own solo canoes. I sold the Magic last year with no regrets.

What about you, Jim? Have you ever built a solo canoe? ;)

1JimD......go to the main page, at the bottom click on the Special Interest groups, go to the Builders forum. Lots of boat building in there.

Yeah Guys !
Now that's what I'm talking about !!

I've built canoes for years, but always group paddled and ended up in a tandem all the time. I've done a few over night solos. But am looking for a longer solo trip.

Thanks Ben and Alan !
