No need to bring a laptop as GoPro has you covered there too. If the simple remote control is not enough, they have one with a live wifi screen thats waterproof and shock resistant. And if you want to get your dog involved, GoPro (and others) make dog harnesses for action cams, both for on the back and under the chin mounts. There are plenty of YouTube dog vids out there.
In all seriousness, a selfie stick would cost a good deal less and work if you have a camera you like, but will require more handling. A remote, which could be mounted to a PFD would require one push to start a video that could capture the whole landing, display, and release - and would allow you to select any one frame as a still shot for display here on BWCA.com. Just an idea for anyone who is thinking about such things.

Yeah, I could mount it high on a stick in the bow. Then I could bring a laptop to use as a monitor for selfies.
I also was thinking because my dog knows how to sit up I could put velcro around her paws then place the camera for her to hold. Just set the timer and voila, instant fish pic.
I'll be the first person to have a pic in BWJ taken by their dog. :)

that is a tough one. my cannon p@s is in my life vest pocket, for me it's a left hand hold the fish, right hand shoot. now that's a smallie without teeth. no sure what you will do with that toothy walleye, or northern. most of the time there's no photo.

Why take a picture? The fish are always bigger without a picture. CB

I used to put my point and shoot on a gorilla pod then wrap it around my yoke. I'd set the 10 second timer and push the yoke up about 5 feet in front of me laying between the gunnels.
This worked fine until I started tripping with my dog who sits in the bow. I took some pics of fish laying in the boat and I really don't like those. Any ideas for when I get that 30 inch walleye? :)

I never used a selfie stick and not even seen one, but I'm thinking it might be the ticket. I can hold decent size fish with one hand under the gill plate. Now, a 20 lb. northern or lake trout is a different story.
I might just try training my border collie in the fine art of photography. Hey - they're supposed to be really smart right?

I don't like bringing big fish into the canoe, even when tandem. I see too many times where the fished gets abused before releasing, flopping around in the bottom of the canoe to poor gripping and time out of water. I like to take the pics in the water. For me it is about preserving the memory. An added benefit is when they are in the water it is much easier to lie about their size. :)

quote Otzi: "I use my GoPro and the Jaws/Gooseneck accessory to clamp to my yoke or thwart. It has a neck that will twist and bend any way you want it and stay. You can pull still frames from your video on the GoPro, so I just hit record, pose, then stop. You can cut the exact frame out when you get home, and then have a picture in 1080p. No need to take multiples as you have hundreds of frames to choose the precise moment you want, if you really want to go through all of them - or just find the first one you like."
I just saw pics my 14 year old neighbor posted on facebook doing something similar. He had all these great shots of dolphins jumping in the wake of their boat. Kinda hard to get when snapping one frame at a time so he told me it was video that he cut. This is probably the future of photography.
It's a great idea, thanks for the feedback!

Only kept one over the years, Kinda hard with only 2 hands! GoPro seems to be doable, fly flippin , just need co-operative fish. I use a Galaxy3 discard phone as a remote control/viewfinder/monitor. Recharge with Nomad 13.

I'm assuming your comment wasn't tongue and cheek. I do a lot of trolling up there. It's a matter of picking a crankbait and paddling along shore at the desired depth. A depth finder is a must unless you want to lose lures to the rocks. It really doesn't take much skill to get a couple of dinners.

Use your paddle as a selfie stick. Mount the Gorilla Pod on your paddle near the grip. Grasp the blade. Smile!

Thanks Jaywalker, you've raised my curiosity about this. But now my bigger problem is convincing my wife. :(

My guess is a CCS."
That's what I guessed, too.

It will be time to break that jinx on this next Wabakimi trip :) With respect to the self-photo dilemma, I have never figured this one out either. I don't have a dog to travel with me :) and I usually just land it and measure before releasing. The ones I eat on occasion are the only so far that I've been able to photograph.
I have a gorilla tripod that goes with my waterproof Sony digital camera and I like the idea of strapping it to my portage yoke. That might be the best option although the paddle idea does have its merits as a selfie stick for the camera.

Here's how bad I am at fishing...I spent 10 days in WCPP with a guy who knows how to fish. I caught 0 fish.
I spent 7 days in Wabakmi in 2011. I caught 2 northerns, period.
I am mythologically bad at fishing.

That made me laugh. Fishing is a funny sport sometimes. I've had days in quetico where the action was non stop. Other days I wouldn't get a hit. It does take some luck.
