nojobro	06/20/2016 09:31AM   Booker only really tolerates the canoe. He will want to lay down the whole time. Hope that will work. I don't think he'll jump out mid-lake, but I am concerned he'll jump for shore as we near landings. I don't think he did that before, though. The route I've chosen doesn't have long periods in the canoe at one go, so I think we'll be okay. He LOVES the camping part of the trip.

Banksiana	06/17/2016 10:15AM   My guess is that you'll need both packs behind to balance the dog in front. Should all fit. I'd suggest taping part of a foam pad in front of you for the dog, better comfort and traction and will keep him/her out of the bilge water and more likely to stay put.
Bogwalker	06/17/2016 10:26AM   As a Prism owner I'm pretty sure it Should fit Larger pack behind you, smaller pack in the bow, dog between you and bow-if the trim is better with small pack in stern behind the big pack that could work too. If you have time play around at the entry to see what works best-might be nice to have a small bubble level along to set in the bottom to check for trim. The larger pack may be snug but you should be able to get it to fit.

Food pail is in the bottom of the big canoe pack. Large pack weighs 42 pounds and small pack weighs 22 pounds. I have a hanging scale and weighed them.

boonie	06/17/2016 08:44AM   I'm with mooseplums - it should fit with no big problem. It's been a few years since I used a Prism but I could get that in a Magic. The big pack should lie flat behind you, the smaller pack in front of you and the dog.

All he's going to do is stink up the tent and make me carry his stuff. And possibly cause a capsize! Why am I bringing him then????Haha. To be completely honest the real reason I'm taking him is that I'm a woman traveling alone. If I have my dog I won't feel as vulnerable to other humans. If dudes would stop praying on women then I could decide whether or not to bring him based on other factors. Alas... He might look like a softie but he has protected his family from threats before. He's a good boy. :)

mjmkjun	06/17/2016 06:04PM   Yep, It would all fit in my Prism. I don't know how much you weigh (and I won't ask) but till you get to the landing you won't be sure how you'll distribute load. I'm 175 lbs and this is what I'd do with my large pack (45lbs) and a blue barrel (35 lbs): the larger pack behind me, my blue barrel closest to bow and a dog between me & blue barrel. If bow is nosing down some than slide larger pack back a bit. Plenty room in a Prism. Tractor seat slides back for adjustments, if so equipped. I've been known to stand my blue barrel up with no loss of balance--as long as there's no play.

LindenTree3	06/17/2016 03:15PM   I would definitely bring the pooch. I can't tell you how much I miss not having mine on my Alaska Solos. Next year, I am certain I will bring her up. PS, I am not familiar with a Prism, but I bring 2 packs also when Soloing, and an 80 pound dog (Well I used to). It all fits easily in my 12.5 foot OldTown Pack canoe.

Do they all go with? :) The day the dog paddles, sets up the tent, reads the map, gathers firewood, isn't to tired to start a fire, and catches dinner... then you might have a case about true solo. I can't imagine the multiple personality thing, Boonie, your scaring me. Haha.

TomT	06/17/2016 10:23PM   It should work just fine. One thing to think about is if for some reason your dog jumps out of the canoe mid lake. I had this happen when I accidentally startled my dog by touching her head with a fishing rod. My dog is 55 lbs. also and there's no way I could lift her into the canoe soaking wet. My solution is to carry two 6 foot leashes and that way I can link them together then clip to her vest and tow her to the nearest shore. Your mind will be on your dog a lot so yes, it's really not a solo. I think it's a good idea to bring him/her on your first one. You'll have peace of mind.
Nordeast	06/18/2016 01:17AM   Yes it should all fit if your dog likes solo canoes. My dog doesn't like solo's because he can't turn around or lay down easily, but if your dog is fine with it, it should be fine. For reference I just got off a solo with a Prism but without the dog.

mjmkjun	06/20/2016 01:16PM   When Booker gets up in age and can't manage the trips consider a small caliber. Practice practice practice till you can hit a thigh or knee cap. ;-) The way the Prism is pinched in the front is why I suggested dog just in front of you. Also easier to control should he suddenly be surprised by something. Good paddling and gorgeous weather for your trip.
