I also moved my seat back about 10 inches, this gives me room to leave the yoke on full time. It also helped trim the canoe out because my dog always canoed with me. That's where she rides. I left my dog in MN with my wife, (I paddle in AK now) however I keep the seat in the same position, I just trim my Canoe with my camping gear in the front or by using a dry bag filled with water. (I also lowered the seat about 3 inches to change the center of gravity, for added stability)

I have since removed the front Thwart. Didn't feel it served a purpose since the yoke is on there full time.

quote veggykurt: "Thanks for the welcome! I am allowing for 14 full days for planning purposes to do the Hunter Island Loop. It probably may take only 12. I am leaving my car at an outfitter at trails end and getting a ride to Hook Island just outside of Cache Bay. Up the falls chain, again. I have an Old Town Pack 12 solo canoe, but I need to construct a portage yoke for it, so I have been checking out some ideas on some canoe forums."

Veggykurt, nice all purpose boat, built for rivers.
Love my Old Town Pack just got off 3+ foot waves in AK with it. Steady and quick turning boat, slow of course, but there are trade offs with all things.

Pics from of my Yoke. I have the dished version, padded it, cut it down and mounted it underneath, I didn't want the ugly thing on top of my gunnels.

I did a solo trip up the falls chain 4 years ago or so. 12 days. Made a lot of mistakes in planning: WAY too much gear, too ambitious of a route. I tipped over once near shore by being too hasty. I hit some bad wind on Kawnipi and was windbound for 2 days. The constant roar of the wind drove me a bit crazy. I left and had to face big water and big wind, which I actually managed reasonably well. But I survived it all (I was 58 years old at the time) and picked up some incredible experiences. In a month I will do the Hunter Island Loop, but with much less, much better gear. This is my first entry in this forum

Welcome and good luck! I agree with billconner that the Hunter's Loop is a 2 week trek.

Welcome! Sounds a lot like my first solo - I had all those problems and a couple of other ones, but I survived and did more. They get better and I'm sure your second one will go much more smoothly. Let us know how it all works out this time.

Veggykurt......groovy moniker

Hunters Island is a good run and was my first trip into the Quetico as well as my first solo.......all in a boat I had never paddled before. It sounds so crazy now but at the time I figured I would just go and do it. I ran out of time to give the boat a test paddle......oh well, it worked out and remains one of my best trips.

It took me 13 days at a slow but steady pace. A few tricky spots......follow your progress inch by inch on the map unless you have GPS. Note the Chatterton Falls portage is actually about 1/4 mile away.......I paddled to Chatterton and expected the portage there. Just enough sign to look enticing.....don't take the bait. I do suggest paddling up near the falls however, parking the boat a safe distance away and exploring on foot. Very impressive. Do not go inside via canoe.

Welcome and very cool. How long do you think Hunters Island loop will take you? I always figured I'd allow two full weeks. Where are you starting form?

Welcome, some great paddling country you have covered. Too much gear and food are very common problems.
As a newbie I suggest you read some of the past threads and make comments bringing them up to recent material. We pretty much share it all here and your thoughts are more than welcome.

Glad to hear of your experiences. I WAS going to do Hunter's Island Loop in Quetico, but changed my mind, given that I don't have all that much experience in the Pack. I will be going into the Brent Lake area instead, an unexplored area for me. This will also be for 12 days. I bought a clamp on yoke and it works well, but is a bit of a hassle taking it on and off. Glad to see a pic of your Pack and the dog too.
