The Green River is a trip that should be on everyone's bucket list. Careful planning will make it a trip of a lifetime. Watch the river levels and avoid the high water that comes down with the snow melt since it will raise the river level putting many campsites under water and making the others hard to access. This will also likely be a time of great insects, heat and fast water.
Unbelievable scenery and hiking opportunities.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice river trip in Utah/western CO? My son and his girlfriend are living in Grand Junction CO and I'd like to get a trip in with them when I go to visit this summer or fall. We did a BWCA trip a year ago, but I'd like to try a western river. Parameters: up to a week or so in length, preferably river, some lake ok, but not too much white water. They can paddle all day, but don't have much WW experience plus they'll be bringing their dog. Class I - II is fine.
Focus would be on scenery, wildlife, lack of crowds. I saw Dan Cooke's pics of the San Juan, which looks incredible, but a little to tough for our crew.

The Green River in Utah (Green River to confluence) is an excellent trip. We took a very leisurely 11 days (can be much shorter). No whitewater. We did it in August--it was hot, but bearable. If you get hot, jump in. Good hiking and camping.

I have the Falcon Guide "Paddling Colorado", 2009. The Colorado river below Glenwood Springs offers some float options without rapids beyond II-III but is mostly parallel to I-70 and the railroad. The Ruby/Horsethief Canyons. 25 miles with put in 15 miles east of Grand Junction and rated at I-II might work.
There are some nice lakes and reservoirs but nothing close to Grand Junction.
There is some great hiking in the area and that is what I do when I visit.

I also would suggest the Green River through Canyonlands. As has been mentioned great scenery and great side hikes. Should arrange an airboat shuttle out at the end.
