I drive back and forth to lower michigan a couple times a year from Minnesota. I am wondering if there are any recommended areas for camping and canoeing mainly in the southern portion of the UP but anywhere will work.
Yes, I saw the thread from July 2010. Looking for other ideas to
Thanks

quote OldFingers57: "Another good idea is the Indian River Canoe trail just south of Munising, MI. It's not too far from Big Island Lake Wilderness.

Indian River Canoe Trail

Another idea down in the mitten of MI is the Manistee River. You can camp any where along the river in some of the sections. It's a fun little river with a strong current. Lots of turns to it. Great clean water and some great fishing too. Plus it's not that busy. "

The Big Manistee is a wonderful and very scenic river in Michigan. It is surely one of my favorites.

Sylvania Wilderness. Its BWCA-lite. Paddle only in all lakes except one with private residences. Old growth forest, never been logged or burned.

Link to previous discussion. Its a good place to take people on a trial run if they're unsure about the full wilderness experience.

I'll echo Sylvania and I've been there many times. Also has a good area for car camping if you don't want to do the backcountry thing for whatever reason and do day trips. The entire area is reachable via day trips if your willing to do some paddling.

Craig Lake state Park is another.

I think there is another canoe area in the UP called Big Island Lake Wilderness.

Just into Wisconsin is Whisker Wilderness. Not much for canoeing, but the area is lightly traveled. A lake called Perch Lake across the road with dispersed walk-in only camping around its edges.

Anyone ever been to Cedar River? Not a wilderness, but could be a fun stop-over.

Ya, It's one of my favorites too. Love that you can camp pretty much anywhere. Some great sites that are already kind of established.
