Going into Wood on June 14th weekend (2018) with my fly-tying club. We'll be looking for bass, northerns, walleye or anything else that will hit a streamer.

I've generally tied these only in black, red and yellow deer hair. I haven't moved into more earth toned colors but it's an intriguing idea.

What kind of waters do you have around you? Smallies are pretty active down in Southern Wisconsin, and keying in pretty well on topwater in the evenings. Haven't been on the trout streams since April, and probably won't until the end of the month or next...which I am itching to do.
Been trying to get my first carp on the fly on a little pond near my home, but haven't tricked one of those guys yet.
Headed into the dub on the 12th, will be bringing my 8wt and looking to do some damage when I can.

Doesn't seem there is much going on with this forum, where are all the north woods fly fisherman and fly tiers. Anyone been fly fishing, what's been working, what flies have been hot and how and where did you fish them. I've primarily fished small streams up here for brookies, I could use some coaching on lake fishing with a fly rod. As long as it bends my rod I don't care what it is.

I don't tie flies, I'am about as clumsy as a bear cubs with mittens on, but I did put Bucktails on about 60 jigs this winter and tied some bucktails to my top water smally lures. I did tie some bucktails onto some of my northen spoons, and waiting to see if that screws up the action, if it does I'll simply cut the hair off and use them naked, the hooks naked NOT ME, anyone seeing that would be in the shrinks office for years. They may not catch fish but they sure are pretty. FRED

HighnDry, you tying anything special for Walleyes?
Fog 51, for not tying flies sounds like you're doing a pretty good job with buck tail.

I'm not the expert in my club, but probably a dry fly conditions-pending with a nymph as a dropper. Hard to tell. Some have caught walleye on a subsurface deerhair plug (think dahlberg diver although there are many versions of this deerhair wet fly out there).
To respond to FOG's comment, yellowbird spun deerhair on their dr.spoon 295s and the larger size and Rapala added this feature to there magnum x-rip minnow to fairly good effect. I have one of each and plan to be fishing them this Spring.

Try a largeish popper style fly with rubber legs that stick out the side, cast up near shore near dead falls, under overhanging trees and let it sit longer than you think you should. Smallies find it tough to resist those twitchy legs.

Been to, and camped on, Wood several times. I usually go around the second week of June. This year planning a September trip. Good bass fishing to the left of the portage to Hulu. Use Clouser Minnows (I have used black & white, red & white) as well as black Marabou Leech. For pike go to the east end of Wood at the narrows. Plenty of pike. I have used a Flashabou streamer (about 4 to 6 inches of multi-colors of flashabou on a bead/tungsten head size 1 or 0/1 hook). Have also caught walleye in front of the campsite at the narrows just drifting through that slot using a black rabbit tail about 3 to 4 inches in length. I tie those on a size 1 Aberdeen hook with a black tungsten bead. You may loose some of these since you should be very near the bottom.

Just a strip of black rabbit fur tied to the top of the hook shank. You need to move the rabbit fur to tie in your thread. Do not want to 'mat' down the rabbit fur. I like very simple flies. This one is black thread, black bead and, a strip of black rabbit fur.

Always drama when I go fishing. Had to pay to launch my boat, that sucked. The flies were bugging the crap out of my lab so all he did was run from one end of my boat to the other. I only caught one small fish and didn't get a chance to throw any flies, and got rained on, didn't stay out very long. Other than than pretty good day.

Pretty simple zonker strip fly. Could start the thread at the hook bend and tie the rabbit strip down matuka style, maybe a little stronger.

Nice looking flies. Over the years I have collected, and tied, many flies. In the last few years I have decided that simple works for me. I am at that stage where just being on the water is a successful trip.

Simple is great, I don't get to fish as much as I would like so I try and tie more involved stuff more of a challenge than anything else, besides I like pretty flies. I wonder if just a piece of black wool yarn would work as a leech pattern?

Thanks Boondock. I meant to respond to say that I've got a lot of poppers tied up as well as some classic streamers. Bass fishing will be fun on that lake no doubt.
