I'm going to make an assumption that you like fishing for the big toothy critters, based on your name muskieman. That said, last fall I spooled my 10 weight with the RIO Clouser for Big Nasties line. Its tough as nails (had a 44" pike rub my line along the keel of my fishing boat from bow to stern without so much as a scratch), it turns over bulky streamers in a stout wind, and it stays nice and loose in cold water. As far as changing lines, as soon as it starts sinking even after a thorough cleaning or if it has any nicks that are down to the core I replace it. I don't mind being bit off, but there's something especially heartbreaking about losing a nice fish due to crappy line.

I vary a lot as to when I change a line. Generally I will let them get pretty ratty before I change. I will change them out if I get a break in the coating in the middle of the line, which seldom happens. I don’t mine a little cracking. If a line casts well and a floating line still floats, I’m okay with it. If I am having performance issues, that’s a different deal. If it is dirty, a little dish soap and water in a sink may help.

Right now I have Rio, Cortland and SA lines on my reels. Their premium lines are all pretty good.

Sorry kinda late to this post...just bought myself a WFF shark skin 5 wt line. Best line out there...easy as heck to shoot and shoot even farther. Totally worth 100$

I change my line almost every year for my 6-wt floating which is what I use the most. Otherwise, every 2-3 years or if I damage it.

For floating line for bass, I like Rio Clouser line.
For floating line for pike I like Scientific Anglers pike line.
For intermediate line up to 8-weight I like Cortland camo

I prefer lines with loop connections for leaders.

It helps to clean your line often and be careful about standing on it, especially if you have shoes on.
