Santa	06/22/2016 10:28PM   I've fished right below basswood falls with spinning gear and it was productive with walleye, bass, and pike. The pike were heavy hitters, not sure 5/6 wt would do in current if one of those snagged you. Flies for walleyes would be tempting to pike. What were you thinking of using?
Mainer	06/23/2016 04:26AM   Santa, I would bring some clousers, deceives, wooley buggers, and other streamer patterns for the walleye. I would throw in a few top waters foe the smallmouth bass. I understand the risk of bringing a 6 wt and hooking a big pike, that is why I am still debating bringing the 8 wt instead. My 6 wt is a four piece rod, but the 8 wt is a two piece and would bea little more difficult to pack in. I also have an intermediate line for the 8 wt, but not the6 wt, so that is something that makes me lean toward the 8. I will probably throw both in the truck and make the decision based on the weather forecast just before we leave Ely.
Santa	06/15/2016 11:28PM   My trip this year is mid July. I'd like to use my new 8wt 9' rod enough to get comfortable using in a canoe. I'd like to catch some bronze backs and pikes on top waters with my floating wt forward line and anything with my sink tip line. I'm going to try these new flies and see what happens.
Moonman	02/17/2016 09:27PM   For me its still trying for muskie on the fly. I have caught lots of lakers and pike on the fly, but no Muskie yet. Granted I mostly fish georgian bay in Ontario for muskies and its a quality not quantity fishery, so it makes it a bit harder. Other than that, maybe do a little small stream brown/brookie fishing as I did when back in highschool. Havent done it for a lot of years now. Moonman.
cschub13	02/12/2016 08:08AM   I just found this subforum the other day, but not surprisingly being a smaller group there isn't a lot of activity. So having said that... What are some goals for 2016 in terms of your fly fishing adventures!? Me: Headed up to Knife Lake in mid May, and hoping to get a lot of action on the fly rod. Trying hard to land a lake trout and a 40"+ pike. I guy can dream.
LetsGoFishing	02/12/2016 01:52PM   I'm only taking 1 trip to the BWCA this year - mid June - Shell, Lynx, Hustler area. My main goal will be to get a 30+" pike on a fly. Bonus if I can get a walleye on the fly. I'll be in central WI mid-May to also try for a good pike/musky on the fly. I am going to check one of my goals off on Monday, which is to fish the new WI early C/R trout season. Heading to the Driftless area to find some open water. Last goal for the year is to catch some trout in the mountains of east TN when I visit some family this summer. I took a guided drift boat trip on a tail water a couple years ago, which produced some fish despite the crazy weather. This time, I am going to try my luck on the small streams.

Santa	07/29/2016 06:32AM   Well our trip was last week 7/17-22nd, got caught up in the severe thunderstorm No damage for us, we were very luck we had four guys in tent to hold it down. I did catch pike with my fly rod, no trouble bringing them in with 8 wt. It is more difficult fly fishing out of moving canoe. Enjoyed it quite a bit.
Mainer	06/21/2016 06:29PM   I too just found this sub forum. I am taking my first trip to the Boundary Waters in September and I can not wait. I am normally a flyfisher man but I want to catch some walleyes, a new fish to add to my life list, and I built a spinning rod for the occasion. Catching a walleye would be my goal for 2016, but if I could catch one on a fly that would be a big bonus. We are headed into Baswood Falls in mid September, so I am going to fish the river as well as Crooked and Horse. Does anyone have any suggestions for fly fishing that time of year I would appreciate hearing them. I have plenty of rods, reels, lines, and equipment, everything from a 2weight rod to a 10 weight rod. I tend to fish lighter rods than the "experts" say I should and I am still debating between the 6 weight and the 8 weight. I know most would say the 8 weight, but the 6 weight is more fun and a little easier to cast IMO. Can I get deep enough to get walleye with fly gear? Thanks for any help Mainer
smokedwhitefish	09/24/2016 01:10AM   Just got back from the Sawbill area. Landed a smallie, pike, and a walleye on my 5 wt! The walleye completes a lifetime goal for this relatively new fly guy!
fishnfreak	02/20/2016 08:14AM   Moonman, For muskies on the fly try Day Lake flowage in Wisconsin. It's a fairly small lake but is full of medium sized muskies and few larger ones. It has a fairly nice campground on it and has a motor limit. You will catch a musky on the fly here. We avg. about 5-7 a day.
TMakela	02/15/2016 01:45PM   Great idea. Going up in June solo up through Malberg into the Adams/Boulder/Pan area. I too would love to get into a Pike in excess of 30". But fish, lots of fish, catch and release eat a couple... I've caught a Walleye on a hot August day up at Finger lake. Would like to try for more. I would like to figure out an ideal mix of flies. Bring some sure things and tie some you can't find just anywhere. Too many decisions though. Also I would like to take the time to pick some spots to hit in the same area that could prove fruitful. I'm bringing floating and sinking spools for my 9 wt. Would bring 5 with too but that's too much stuff...
FOG51	02/16/2016 02:38AM   My main goal for fly fishing for 2016 was to find someone who could teach this old dog how to fling a fly from my canoe, I do well from the bank but not from the canoe [about 25 feet is the best I can do]. I was talking to Housty9 and he said his father-in-law was a fly fisherman and would probably be able to advise me, he said it would be his pleasure. Now have to wait till open water. FRED
CrookedPaddler1	02/16/2016 09:05AM   Same goal as I have had for the past few years.....23" smallie! closest i have come was a 20 1/2" smallie. Can't imagine the fight of a big fish on the fly rod!

bassnet	04/21/2016 05:03PM   I have caught just about everything on a fly...except Catfish. Knowing that Flatheads and Blues are aggressive feeders, I think my best chance will be when they invade the riffles of area creeks to pick off spawning Shad, Crappie, and White Bass. Right now I am catching a bunch of Sandies(white bass), and I have caught Flatheads to 6lbs in the riffles on grubs, but cats are evading me. Endeavor to perservere.
