An 18ft Grumman had no problem hauling myself and another guy, way too much gear, and two huskies. It can be a workout hauling that boat on portages though.
If we left some of the luxury items behind we could have gotten by in a smaller boat.

Wife and I tripped with a 85 and 70 pound dogs a couple of times in a Alumacraft 17 foot canoe and had a little room to spare.

Might depend on how much gear/how many bags you bring, but I imagine one of the big Northwood boats (18.5') would do you well. My guess is that's probably the smallest boat you could get away with.
