This is a full-featured relatively modern receiver, in a form factor with tactile buttons for reliable operation in cold and wet weather and when wearing gloves or mittens. Its antenna design tends to get better satellite reception under heavy tree cover than many others, making it great for hiking in forested areas. In addition to basic waypoint and track functionality, this unit includes a tilt-compensated electronic compass and barometric altimeter, worldwide basemap, wireless data sharing functionality, WAAS GPS adjustment, and dedicated geocaching features. Physically it has both a belt clip and a carabiner for carrying.
Also included is the Garmin TOPO U.S. 24K Northern Plains maps microSD card. This was a separate purchase adding 1:24,000 scale topographic maps covering Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Nebraska. The unit also supports additional maps from Garmin’s “BirdsEye” satellite imagery subscription or “Custom Maps” utility for georeferencing images of paper or other maps.
