Just got back from Swan and fishing was slow for us. But, little duckling did catch a nice walleye that fed the 2 of us ;) That site on the point on Swan is really nice and the other 2 are decent. The site on the point was taken when we got to Swan and the 2 guys camped there said that they caught several nice walleye the night before. The fishing action that we did get (smallie, northern, walleye) was all off the tip and around the north side of the big point that has the campsite on it. Little duckling was wiped and in the tent by 7:30 each night so we didn't fish the evening when those guys said they had the best action.

Never been this route, but my friends wanted small lakes and this is the route I chose. Two of the group would also like to get into some decent Smallies primarily, but I'm happy with anything as I don't fish as much anymore. I'm thinking we would base camp on Swan? I was thinking Vernon may be more crowded with traffic from Brule?

That is a nice route. Watch for moose. The portages are easy, even the mile long one from Swan to Vernon is a walk in the woods. I didn't catch any smallies only pike. To be honest I didn't fish that hard. I think you would be right about camping on Vernon. I even thought about staying on Vernon this summer as opposed to Brule. The site on Vernon near the portage to Brule is supposed to be pretty nice. When will you be going? I am planning on being in that area the second week in August.

You going to be there during the week or on the weekend? I'm going in on the 11th and I have my heart set on that site by the portage.
I heard that those portages are rough and hilly. Lots of rocks and up and down. Was someone pulling my leg or does it depend on what you are comparing it to?

I'm going in on the 10th!!! No just kidding. I'm not sure what date I'll be there. I guess it will depend on when I can get a permit. Also I will be going to my 50th high school reunion the first week in August. Then visit a couple cousins both in Wisc. So dates are up in the air yet. It should be around your time maybe a little later.
The portage from Brule to Vernon is the fairly steep. I guess steep hills are what you are used to. Out here, steep is when you are on your hands and knees! Have a good time.
Maybe our paths will cross. I will be solo in a blue Mad River Explorer. Larry

Fishing on Swan is excellent, It's been a few years since I was there but time doesn't change fishing much. I agree that the water temperature will be cold for a hard walleye bite they still are there. The small mouth fishing is great. Don't forget to hit the rapids on Vernon where Brule Lake drops in, always caught walleye there. Good luck. PS there are lakers in Swan.

As a general rule it is not a great idea to get your heart set on any one campsite. Although, I must admit that I have done it and gotten pretty lucky a couple of times. I have found some of my favorite sites by heading for one, only to fine it occupied, and then having to actually explore for another rather than making a beeline to a particular spot.

I know, and I do have a backup plan or two, but that one campsite is what sold me on this trip. I do ask myself if Vernon and Swan are enough to justify the choice at this time though.
I suppose we could just book it to Winchell if we got there early and it was occupied. Its about 7 miles, not that bad. My buddy and I are quick when we want to be, we did the Brule EP to the far side of South Temperance in about 2 hours not even rushing it. That's a little further but without any portages, besides the 5 rods. Throw a little brandy in with our water and we won't even feel the pain of pushing a little too hard.
I wasn't serious at first there but the more I think about it, the more it seems feasible. If I got on the water by 6 and saw that the campsite was taken by 8 then I bet we could get to a campsite on Winchell by noon.

If it is taken you could backtrack to site 769 on Swan if it is open. A friend of mine loves that one and the site reviews in the maps section seem to confirm that it is at least a 4 star spot. Only issue might be with walleyes if you are looking to fish for them. Swan is deep and takes a while to warm up. I have been told that 4th of July on Swan is when the bite turns on. Take it all with a grain of salt since I have no personal experience. Just relaying what I have heard but the area is supposed to be very nice.
