This is our 3rd year in the BWCA, and 1st time on Knife. We're going from June 6 - 10th. I was wondering what kind of lures and bait I should bring, target species is Walleye for sure and Lakers. I've never caught a Laker before. I've been reading and some people say flashers and inline spinners work well, but not mention on how big the lure should actually be. If any of you guys have tips that would be great. I was also thinking about bring live bait minnows for the lakers and leech for the eyes, is it worth it through all the portaging. We'll be coming through e.p. 25 and a tow to Sucker Lake. Any suggestion on water depth, structure, technique, anything would be helpful. Thank you for all the information! |

QueticoMike: "I have written an article called Grand Slam Lures, which might be helpful to you. If you would like to read it, just send me an email - queticomike@yahoo.com - and request the article." Great article! Thank you. |

DeanL: "We took 4 consecutive trips to Knife from 2012-2015 partly due to the great fishing. The water is really clear, even by BW standards. I'm so JACKED about this trip! What's the fishing traffic like in the south arm? Also what kind of fish finder/depth finder do you use. We'll be renting the canoes so I've though of a few ways to bring a fish finder and mounting the transducer. Do you have any sug |

Frankie09: "... Do a search of depth finders. There are a lot of detailed threads. But since you asked, I use a Lowrance Ice Machine. It shoots right through my kevlar canoe. I would not go to the BW wihtout it (but lots of guys don't use them and have more success than me) |

DeanL: " This is what I use for a locator. The suction cup works great for me, when not in use I just set it in the canoe. In our experience the fishing pressure doesn't seem to be too bad, the lake is huge. However finding a campsite in the south arm is never an easy task." Love it! I'm thinking about picking up a Lowrance® Hook2 5X SplitShot Sonar/GPS Combo. |

Knife is quite clear and your fastest way to few fish is heavy line. That includes florescent line or brightly colored line. Think clear, think fluorocarbon and think light, light, light. I would definitely go with mono. Topwater I would throw 8lb green XT for smallmouths. Walleye I would go 6lb Gamma clear tops and drop to 4 if things got tough. For trout I like the 8lb green XT as well. Pike I fish huge baits and generally use heavy braid. But for typical canoe country pike gear I would use 12lb and Knot2Kinky hand made wire leaders in say 20lb test tops. |

don't rule out the showdown, works great, great on batteries, light weight and reasonably priced. |

Lotw: " I do like that it works on batteries, and is light weight, about for another 50 dollars I can get downscan imaging. Decisions decision... |

For walleyes your going to want to fish a little deeper than your used to during the day if it's calm. I would also really try and hit the sunrise / sunset time frame or a time when the walleyes move shallower. We did catch a few lake trout on rapala but we always had our best luck on spoons trolled over the deep holes. A few times while drifting over such holes a school of bait fish would be so thick you could see them on the depth finder. If you locate something like that there will surely be trout around. |
