johnsoner: "On 11 Jun my small group will be going through Saganaga (tow) and making our way to SAK. Just looking for general information and tips for fishing the area. We predominately target W, SMB, and NP, but wouldn't mind trolling for LT if it would be productive at this time of year. Thanks in advance, for any responses!" We went to SAK (the far eastern portion close to the portage to Hanson) in June of 2013. We did very well for SMB and Walleye using leeches with the TGO method. Points and rocky shorelines in about 6-10 feet of water worked well. You should do plenty well that time of year, especially since this appears to be a bit of a late spring. We really enjoyed our time on SAK - just make sure to set up camp early, because it can get busy! |

I have been on that exact route in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2016. In 2007 we saw almost no one on the entire trip. It has gotten more and more busy over the years. We always go between June 10 and the 1st of July. Good fishing for Walleye and Bass. Pike have been around but not real active for me. One guy got a 32 inch. Use leaches for sure and jig on bottom for Walleye. Weve had some good days. Also troll crankbaits along the shore for action as well. Troll the middle of the lakes for Trout. Ive not done real well for them but some buddies have caught a few over the years. If you go to Eddy falls, which is cool, be ready to see people. It is on a portage and people go there which is understandable. In 2016 when we stopped by there was one set of people leaving (3 canoes), another just arriving (2 canoes), we had 4 canoes with us and there were 4 or 5 canoes sitting at the other end of the portage with people there enjoying the falls. It was a mess. If you want to go where its less busy, all the little lakes to the west are also solid fishing and see less people, Ameober, Cherry, Topaz, lake of the clouds....all those. Cherry is supposed to be beautiful, ive not made it there yet. There are great cliffs to look at, neat islands. Cool route with great fishing possibilities but VERY Busy. Hope this helps. |
