dele: "I'm going to piggyback on this thread (might start my own if there aren't responses). Entering Quetico on May 29th. Route (from Cache Bay) will include lakes that have all four major species, and we'll be happy to catch any or all of them.
Now that ice out is happening, I'd appreciate any suggestions on how to pattern the lakers, walleye, and smallmouth. By the time we go in ice will have been out for about 2-3 weeks on most lakes, and the extended forecast has a mix of warm and cool weather.
Should we expect lake trout to still be shallow, or will we have to go deep for them by that time? Will walleyes be biting or will they still be in their post spawn lull? Will smallmouth be spawning yet?
Of course these are questions that can't be answered with certainty, but any guidance would be appreciated! My usual method of throwing leeches around until I find fish won't work in Quetico, so I want to have a slightly more specific plan."

My go to for early trout is a Mepps Musky Hunter case shore lines and slow roll focusing on the that secondary drop.

Throw a berkley frenzy or a shad rap behind the boat in about 12ft of water and paddle around. Catch a few and then start casting. The reason for the trolling is efficiency.......you need to find some fish first before you commit to casting.
You can likely use the same lures for lake trout but merely further out.
As per casting I like curly tail mugambo grubs on jig heads. Tough to beat for an all around fish catching combo. You can add a safety pin spinner if desired for a bit of extra flash.
I like spoons in cold water for pike. Get a titanium leader with incorporates a cross lock snap. Take a file to the hooks (diamond pattern) and hang on.

Find some relatively warmer water in the lake. Cast, set the hook, reel in fish.

I would troll shorelines with a gold 14” Husky Jerk and cast jigs off points and around any moving water. That should be a good place to star. Let the fish tell you where to go from there. You should hammer them.
