The DNR report would tell you if it is stocked with splake. The only other possibility is if it next to a splake lake and they are connected by a stream because they will migrate

Wow, I guess I started a mini yanni/laurel here. I've honestly only ever heard of splake mentioned on a fishing show a time or two, never figured I'd run into one. Glad we caught some fish here, it was a long day trip and I ordered the little cleo 3 days before we left, it caught all 4 fish.

What's the difference? Is one better eating than the other or more/less protected or anything? I see the slight physical differences but for a casual fisherman trying to catch dinner, is there anything to be aware of?

Both are excellent to eat. Splake are considered a stream trout and can be caught until the end of October. Lake trout fishing usually end at the end of September.

100 % Laker ...+ or - 5 %
Lakers vary a lot.
If it put up a mediocre fight then it’s definitely a laker.
It has dots on the tail
Not one blue halo
Pretty forked tail
Lacks the hearty mean look splake have
Doesn’t have the big head you see on splake that look like lakers - even though some one mentioned the opposite. My experience is that splake get the big head look.
I would bet $200 of my own money and $10,000 of someone else’s that it’s a laker;)

Well thanks for all the comments. Here's another one from the same lake, same day, same spot. All fought about the same which was not much right at hookset until they were about halfway up. Then from there to the canoe they all had the crazy energy I'm used to with trout.
I don't honestly care which one it is, just thought I'd ask people that know more than I do. Both of these are still swimming.

Those are 2 nice splake... I'm planning to fish Tofte lake off the Fernberg trail sometime in the next 2 weeks... Never fished for splake.

I have a boat not a canoe...they have bookies in there I think. Is it possible to fish from shore?
I've got a bad wheel and hard to walk on uneven ground.

Yogi, Glacier Pond 2 has been the best fishing for me of the 2 lakes. There is a fairy good path leading up to the campsite area. I have fished off the campsite and caught brookies. The campsite is kind of elevated, but you can find places to get down to the waters edge. Slip bobber and a worm did the trick for me.

That is 100 percent a Splake look at the fins. Chars are the only species of fish with that

I was under the assumption I was catching lakers last week but a friend that saw my picture and has far more experience with the trout species says this one might be a splake. Admittedly, I have no clue....and the fish is back in the lake. Thoughts?

DNR fishery report on the lake only mentions lake trout so i never second guessed it, nor would I have necessarily known even if I knew splake were a possibility.

That is 100% Splake.
Look at the jaw, way too short to be a Laker. That's how you tell, look at egknuti's Splake vs Laker pics, perfect comparison.

Maybe check out Glacier ponds across the street.

It looks like a lake trout to me but who knows. Some splake look a lot like brookies, others look a lot like lakers. Some folks say 100% splake, others say 100% laker. The only way to be certain is cut the fish open and count the pyloric caeca. I believe splake have around 70 (+ or -). Brookies have less than 50 and lakers more than 90.
