On a trip many years ago, we had a lot of fun dragging jig and tail combos for smallies, but they weren't the typical round-head jigs that we use for walleyes. Something like a tube jig, I think. Can anyone elaborate on what we may have used? I can't remember.

I can't say what you were using, but I primarily fish the Mississippi river for walleyes and NEVER use round-head jigs.
Check out the H20 Precision jigs made by BFishn Tackle out of Coralville, Iowa. They're streamlined and well balanced. These are pretty much all I use with plastics and they work great for live bait as well. They also make a jig specifically designed for dragging.

I know of guides and pros who regularly drag tubes during the summer. They will go so far as to just stick the rod into a rod holder and drift the bait with the waves or current.
Tough to beat a jig as an all situation fish getter.

We just got back from a week long trip, we were plagued by wind all week and canoe control was difficult to say the least. Most days we were limited to a fast drift with the wind with waves making sight fishing impossible. Our very best producer was a round jig head with a grub body. Easy to cast and can be fished with a fast retrieve.
Whenever it was calm we switched to other presentations but the jig did a count for most of our fish.
