Mostly soft plastic jerk baits

QueticoMike: "BearRaid: "Looking good Mike! How would you rate this year vs. your other trips?"

Probably below average. Really had to work for fish at the beginning of the trip. The water was still cold on the lake where we camped. I couldn't travel due to still rehabbing a dislocated shoulder so we made due with what we had. When we moved closer to the border we found warmer water at the end of the trip and the fishing took a big turn up."

I guess the best news is that the fishing picked up at the end of the trip. Maybe it is just me, but I definitely would rather finish strong than slay them early and get shut out late. I hope your shoulder fully heals soon.

I feel the same way. However, I had it both ways on one trip. We arrived at a lake and had a couple triples that first evening, three fish on at once. Then, for five days, the wind howled and we struggled to control the boats, much less fish. Then, the final full day, we caught so many fish that I simply quit.

The usual suspects. Can't you post pics of normal sized fish so the rest of us can feel a bit better?

Besides, catching average sized fish are far less likely to dislocate shoulders and tear rotator cuffs. You should try it some time.

We came out yesterday after a week. Oh boy for wind. We did have a good trip with strong numbers and lots of nice fish. We found a lot of fish on beds still and lots of abandoned beds too.

After the last 20 incher my shoulder started to hurt at the end of the trip, so I just quit fishing knowing that my last Quetico smallmouth was a 20 incher. I was satisfied.

Too bad you couldn’t move it’s pretty amazing how much of a gap there can be between larger deeper lakes and small shallower lakes when it comes to the smallmouth spawn. Stu is always talking about it "

We could have moved and should have moved. Couldn't move far, but still could of went looking for warmer \ smaller water. I think we thought eventually the water was going to heat up and so would the fishing and we wanted to be there when it did. We were wrong, we kept waiting on better weather, but it never got better. Hopefully I won't have any health issues next year and I can do more paddling and head to the Kawnipi area and back.
