We used them last year as described by mutz. Trout, Walleye Bass everything hit them. I thought that I would lose so many but they are really just a solid piece of lead with hooks and I found that when I used fireline and a fluorocarbon leader I could pull out even the most stubborn snags and at worst would bend the hook some. I used the same jigging rap the entire trip. That said we mostly jigged vertically but over both rocks and sand. My 7 year old son caught on fast to using it. It keeps you busy ripping them up and down. Most times they bite as or just after the lure hits bottom and the second you rip it up fish is hooked and your getting them topside....no counting to whatever for slip bobbering and so on just rip it and reel them up. Youtube search open water jigging rap fishing and youll find several videos.

I tend to fish them vertically to avoid snags, but we've trolled and cast them as well. We really rip them, though I have heard of others who've also had success with a more restrained lift / fall. There are a *ton* of videos online of guys using them, so it might be easiest to just check Youtube for more info.
In the BWCA/Q, these baits are amazing, esp. if you can find mid-lake structure in the summertime. I prefer the biggest size (#9) the majority of the time.

When I google "jigging rap," this is what I get. I've seen them and thought about acquiring but haven't tried any.

I just watched Al Lindner rave about the jigging rap for almost thirty minutes on his fishing show. He was saying he hasn’t used live bait to fish for walleyes in years. He uses a swim jig, a rattling rap and the deadly jigging rap. All summer, mid day, bright skies, doesn’t matter. I’m going to watch it again. Amazing how these guys can carch fish.

AmarilloJim: I fish bladebaits a ton for walleye up north, but haven't had much luck with them for smallmouth. Do you catch many smallmouth with them, and if so, do you fish them any differently for smallmouth than you do for walleye?

Carmike, you mentioned the Jigging Rap option for deep summer walleye in another thread. Can you share you experience with this, including how you work it? Vertical? Casting and 'snapping'? And if anyone else has tried this, please share. I've seen this touted lately as an underused summer option and am pretty intrigued, but haven't ever tried it myself. Thanks.

Do you cast, or use it more as a vertical jigging lure which would resemble what one does in ice fishing? Or both?

We do both, when we cast out allow the jig to hit bottom then a quick short rip then repeat set hook land fish. This method only works on sandy relatively clean bottoms, rocky snaggy bottoms are going to equal lots of snags and lost $7.00 jigging raps.

jigging raps are not blade baits, not even similar
if you use a jigging rap, many people cut the front hook off, keeps it safer and less snags
or the shiver minnow looks like the jigging rap without that front hook

I don't fish them often, one of my buddies uses it extensively. the only way I have fished is totally vertical.

I generally don't use a blade bait shallower than 20 fow so I don't connect with SMB on them until late Fall.
