Undoubtedly known to many, it is on a plaque on my office wall....
"The charm of fishing is that it is the quest for that which is elusive, but attainable, and an infinite series of occasions for hope"

I like that. Same applies to golf.

Dear Lord, grant me the serenity to accept the size of the fish I catch, the courage not to lie about it and the wisdom to know that none of my fishing buddies would believe me anyway… Amen.

“I fish because I love to. Because I love the environs where trout are found, which are invariably beautiful, and hate the environs where crowds of people are found, which are invariably ugly. Because of all the television commercials, cocktail parties, and assorted social posturing I thus escape. Because in a world where most men seem to spend their lives doing what they hate, my fishing is at once an endless source of delight and an act of small rebellion. Because trout do not lie or cheat and cannot be bought or bribed, or impressed by power, but respond only to quietude and humility, and endless patience. Because I suspect that men are going this way for the last time and I for one don't want to waste the trip. Because mercifully there are no telephones on trout waters. Because in the woods I can find solitude without loneliness. ... And finally, not because I regard fishing as being so terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant and not nearly so much fun.”
Robert Traver

And since golf ("A good walk spoiled" - Mark Twain) was mentioned.
I am not against golf, since I cannot but suspect it keeps armies of the unworthy from discovering trout... ~Paul O'Neil. Yeah, I'm a trout guy.
Also, "Give a man a fish and he eats for a day, teach a man to fish and his wife will never see him again."
And finally, "The Gods do not deduct from a man's allotted span the hours spent fishing." I should live to see triple digits.....

Maybe not a "fishing" quote, but certainly fishing-related that my Grandpa always used whenever anyone (mostly Grandma) tried to tell him what to do or tell him he was doing something the wrong way: "Watch your own bobber!" - Gramps

Behold the fisherman, he riseth up early in the morning, disturbeth the whole household. Mighty are his preparations. He goeth forth full of hope and when the day is far spent he returneth smelling of strong drink and the truth is not in him.

There are many reasons why I fish, catching is just one of them.

We always like playing "Where's my bobber"...
When the bobber is under water:
To fishing partner: "Have you seen my bobber?" "I don't see my bobber".
To fishing partner, rubbing it in a bit, "I see your bobber, but I don't see mine"...
"I think mine's gone again?".

"Why am I there, a midwestern schoolmarm in a canoe? Why am I driven to cradle the water tiger, to pen it lightly with my fingers and coax it to kitten? Are muskies the manifestation of my dream? Are we all damned to pursue our secret, primal selves? Are these terrible, tapering tubes of attitude the flame to the moth in me? Caught in the routines of classroom and children, muskies embody chaos. They are hurricane surf, as mercurial as the wind and, in the end, only the wild can still my soul."

"Nowadays, my father couldn’t reach that fishing camp. He’s too wobbly for the pitched Canadian Shield granite. So, I often go alone. When I was young and limber, I’d rise around sunrise. No more; I rise at four, when the sleeping bag is warmest and the day is coolest. I go because the gloaming, unlike me, is still young and the bass are ready to rise to a fly in the hushing fog. Sadly, I wear no more red checkered shirts. My undershirts are now water-wicking microfiber and Lycra. My quick-drying overshirts have as many pockets and doodads as Russian generals have ribbons and bars. If only such shirts were red checked too, red checks to burn brightly beneath dark skies. However, my shirts do their job. They keep me on the water when it’s raining and cool and that’s all I need as I no longer tire of fishing or fish as I did on my first turn."

I bring a Norman Maclean book on every trip I take, so it won't be surprising that my quotes are from him.
“Many of us would probably be better fishermen if we did not spend so much time watching and waiting for the world to become perfect.”
...and ....
“If our father had had his way, nobody who did not know how to fish would be allowed to disgrace a fish by catching him.”

If I wanted to catch more walleyes, I would go to upper red lake. If I wanted to catch bigger walleyes, I would go to lake Erie.
I go to the BWCA for the package deal: Beauty, and solitude; catching fish is just gravy.
