Duff: "Snapped 15lb mono and a medium heavy spinning rod in two places on a hook set. Sounded like cracking off a .22 round. Gotta remind myself that setting the hook in the boat is different than in the solo." yes Duff good point i forgot about the sound. And i didnt mention this in the O.P. but i felt terrible snapping this guys older rod over a $10 lure , SMH !

2015 my canoe partner snapped his brand new jigging rod on a Disappointment Lake walleye the first fish of the trip. I may or may not have given him a hard time after listening to how great this new rod was going to be the entire drive from Michigan. He had to take the paddle/portage of shame to drive back into Ely to get another rod.
Good times!!

My son breaks a rod every year.
When my dad passed, he left behind a ton of rods, not a lot of reels. Gotta be careful of a 30 year old rod, graphite or not.
For our trip next year, I am buying new and taking extras.

Yes twice in the BWCA on graphite rods. Both broke like 1 foot from the tip. My solution was to cut a little of the tip where it broke and and some on the main shaft. Thus I could shove the tip portion into the main shafts hole. It made it very secure and also taped around the connection. The one rod now 6-8 inches shorter I still use 6 years later. Also started bringing up a non destructable ugly stick on trips for backup or main rod.

I am a big fan of the ugly stiks, they make up most of my rod collection.
Only rod I broke was rolling up a window in a car and broke the tip off an ultra light rod. Rod is still useable as I took some wire cutters and clipped it on the second guide from the top.

Set the hook on a snag with Gunsmoke's new rod and snapped it. The next year I stepped out of a three man canoe with two guys in the back, I should say tried to step out of the canoe, The front end came up of course and caught my foot and I fell back in the canoe on to Gunsmoke's new rod I replaced from the previous year. They were purchased at Scheels and replaced as they have a life time warranty thank God.

Yep snapped the end of my St Croixe Pike rod right off. Thought no big deal "lifetime Warranty" right. Well sent it in the SC, got a nice letter back, no new rod or even the old rod. So sorry, LW only on the upper priced rods. I guess $80 isn't enough to spend for the warranty. Needless to say no more SC rods for me. Sorry about the rant, just was very disappointed to say the least. CB
Now I buy Cabela rods, Pro Guides or Fish Eagles. Have had them replaced because they broke, no questions asked, new rod.

Yep. 6'6" light action gray shimano. A garage sale find of ten years prior. Called it the buggy whip and snapped a few inches above the joint slinging a 1/6 oz. rooster tail. I thought I was gonna cry. I loved that rod.

I had a Pfleuger combo break on me when I tried to set the hook on a rock. I’m generally a Pfleuger fan, and I think I just had a bad one. It was a bizarre sensation, though.

A couple times. Most annoying was the first time out with a brand new "trolling/live bait muskie" rod I was using with a big, quick-strike rigged sucker. Had a muskie pulling the balloon out to the center of the lake (think "Jaws"), set the hook hard, had the rod break in two places. Spent the next three months trying to get the manufacturer to honor the one year warranty. When the replacement finally came, after ice-up, the tip was broken.

Not sure if this counts or not, but many years ago I had a two piece rod fly apart when I was casting. I was tossing a larger topwater lure, and the upper half of the rod flew out after it. Luckily, it was not a terribly expensive outfit but it hurt that I had been getting smallies with almost every cast prior to that.

I had a huge Pike swim at a high rate of speed under the boat. My graphite rod exploded. I think it would have withstood the fish if the rod didn’t hit the gunnel of the boat.

A couple times. Dan Gladden calls that "bees." One time I was fishing pike and smashed my rod to pieces on the gunwale in a fit of rage (the old me.) It stung bad.

I was in high school (so roughly 7-10 years ago) when I snapped my great-grandfather's old 11 foot flyrod. It was on a BWCA trip with just my dad and me. I felt awful. My dad was actually pretty cool about it. He could tell I was upset and he played it off as no big deal. It helped that it was at the beginning of the trip because 1.) we had an extra pole 2.) we still had 7 days left in heaven. It snapped as I was reeling in a big smally. Luckily, I was able to still land the fish.

Couple times. Was fishing with a guide up on the Canadian side of Sag, I only brought one rod and broke it when I tried to set a hook on a fish. Don't ever go out with just one rod.
Second was when my fishing partner, Buddy, my lab bit the tip off one of my Saga fly rods. That really sucked!

It's happened to me twice and both times it was due to a nick or worn spot on the blank. One, I'm pretty sure, was from riding in a boat in rough water for a week. The other was after it got banged against a rock. Both rods were graphite.

More than once. Once in the BWCA (on a rock...don't tell anyone). A few times on fish. Twice casting lures (a little heavier than the rod was rated for).

I was fishing with my brother's brother-in-law and he had one of my lures on, got a snag and didnt want to lose it, so he handed me his rod. It was an older, solid type musky rod. I felt a give on the line, then SNAP, the rod broke (at the base) and the transfer of energy to my hands was incredible. They tingled for a day. Anyone else experience this? Laws of physics - it had to go somewhere, and I was on the other end. LOL

In the early days of my offshore 36 hour head boat trips I thought I would be clever and I brought a Cabelas 9' predator rod. Promptly hung bottom with braid and pulled very hard. The rod literally "blew up" in several pieces.
And of course several rods when I was a kid. Fishing rods and bikes don't mix well.

Ugly Sticks are my go-to rods. A delicate rod often does not do well on canoe trips.

Day one of a 6 day trip, just finished setting up camp and headed out onto Bald Eagle. Cast a 3/4 oz spoon and snapped the 2-piece rod just above the joint (while casting, don't ask me how). Fished the rest of the trip with half a rod. Good times.
