I know ice out and weather are impossible to judge, but at the end of May, do you think trout or bass are gonna be more active? As you can probably tell, I'm not a good fisherman so just looking for some advice.

Thanks for any help or hints you can give someone who loves fishing, but doesn't have the time to be good at it.

You should be able to fish for both, often in the same lake. The bass may be super shallow if the water is warming, or a bit deeper. If they are deeper, you may catch a few while trolling crankbaits for trout.

The trout will likely be 10-20 feet down in anywhere from 10-100 FOW. If ice out is very late, the trout may still be cruising shallow, right next to shore, but usually I find them deeper in late May.

Last year, with the super late ice out and then rapidly warming temperatures, we caught trout casting from shore, casting to shore, trolling near the surface, trolling as deep as 20' down, and vertical jigging 45' down. Usually they are not so widely scattered.
