I would assume with a bunch of lakes being ice free that the walleye would be spawning on those lakes?

Most of the state walleye are done or majority have spawned, except for a few which always will stretch it out. Up the Gunflint like Sag and Sea Gull lake they are probably still spawning. Walleye prefer around 45 degrees F. water to really get going. Lakes by Ely are around 45 degrees now. The snow in northeastern Minnesota slowed down the spawn some.
My opinion I think opener up north will be very very slow.

I was fishing near Isabella today, some lakes were still iced over. The walleye’s I caught left a nice milky mess in the bottom of my canoe. Definitely still spawning in that neck of the woods.

i've found the bigger females come and go over night but the smaller males will hang around the moving water for days-----
when they do go back on the feed , 1 may find them in saddles- small bays with some depth to them (30')- rock piles-islands that have a nice edge that doesnt drop off to sharply and relatively close to there spawning areas and they can be stacked if found.

Yes and the males will start biting first always. Actually that is good,it saves some of the big females. Kind of neat fishing where maybe floating ice still exists. have fun,be careful.

Walleyes are spawning in Crooked. Later this week/weekend is the ticket if you want a monster.
