clambdin: "TGO, what size/style hook do you use with the hook only method?"
I prefer to use a #8 Kahle when fishing. as it will catch more fish than other style hooks.
The circle hook is nothing more than a Kahle that got "Knocked Up" for lack of a better description. The Circle hook has a rounded bottom whereas the Kahle is flat.
Both styles have the barb curving back towards the hook shank.

Walllee,

When slip bobbering in Quetico ... what make of artificial are you using ?

I usually forgo using a slip bobber for eyes in Quetico because I have not had any real success using anything but real Nightcrawlers, Leeches or Minnows. Back in the day when live bait was allowed in Quetico I had great success with slip bobbering with real night crawlers.

Kahle hooks? I always thought those things were for catfish and bullheads. Shows what I know. I'll have to stop in and get me some next time I'm in Ely! Thanks TGO!

Let the fish tell you. Try it all. I don't like to bobber fish or fish real slow unless I know I am on fish.

As soon as we locate walleyes, typically switch to a slip setup. I will usually use a #6 Gamakatzu circle or live bait in red and split shot. If we are drifting or slow trolling will switch to a bladed jig. Leeches 100% of the time.

Curious to hear the response on preferred method for catching walleye when anchored in a spot. I have tended to use slip and TGO for the most part, but want to jig some more this year. In early June, we've found fish in < 10 FOW.

Colors of jigs matter to you? Plastics with the leech or just plain hook? What depth do you slip bobber to before switching to jigging? Use a jig when slip bobbering or just a hook? Ever use varying weight sizes when using TGO method? Floating jig heads utilized? Ever use a jig with a spinner, like a Roadrunner?

When I am anchored, I am using a slip bobber rig 90% of the time. Usually where I’m catching walleyes when anchored, it is just too snaggy to cast and retrieve along the bottom.

I have used slip bobber rigs as deep as 30 feet, but most of the time, I use them in the 6 to 12 foot depths. There is a reef on Poohbah that tops out at 30 feet, surrounded by 100 feet of water. The slip bobber rig worked great for me.

WalleyeHunter24: "IMO, a #6 (Gamakatzu or VMC) live bait hook will improve your chances of a solid hook set, since they have a wider hook gap. But, it's just personal preference. use what you have confidence with.

Good luck!"

+1 Owner (not sure if they are made anymore) back in the day was an awesome hook.

Not to be a criticism of your post, but you can be over many fish that will not bite if you move too fast. A very slow troll (well less than 1/2 mph), or casting and letting the hook slowly flutter to the bottom, will catch fish when Walleye ignore speed trolling.

+1
Eliminate water while trying different variations of color, bait/bait profiles, and speed.

Also a super solid recommendation WhiteWolf. Owner hooks are in that classification as well.

When fishing for Walleye, use the plain hook tied directly to your line, with leech , minnow, or part of a crawler, & only use a sinker if absolutely necessary. (the smallest split shot, or next size up-about 4 feet away from the hook.)
You can cast out the hook with bait, and let it slowly settle to the bottom (have patience)
If you decide to troll do the same thing, and drift/paddle as slow as is possible. If you are going 1/2 MPH, you are going about 5 times too fast-just creeping along will give you the most success.
Slip bobbers also work well, and you can use an 1/8th or 1/4oz jig with a leech or minnow, no other weight is necessary.
When baiting the minnow, place the hook about 1/8 inch in on the upper lip (not both lips) This enables the water to flow freely through the gills and the bait will stay alive much longer.
The leech should be hooked about 1/8th inch below the sucker-not through since it is very flimsy and you will lose many leeches casting if you do.

I use a #8 red circle hook with a small bullet shaped weight. Will be interested in hearing TGOs and other responses.

I very seldom have used a slip bobber in Quetico since live bait was banned. A few times , if wave action was “perfect”, I have caught walleyes with a slip bobber rig tipped with a 1/8 or 1/4 oz. jig and a 3 inch twister tail .

Interesting Great Outdoors.. I might try that only hook method out.

I usually use a 1/8 to 1/4 oz yellow/green jig and anchor out and drop it to almost the bottom and then sit patiently forever. Usually works pretty well. My fishing techniques are primitive though lol.

IMO your success will greatly increase by moving your jig around. Vertical jig, cast and constant retrieve, intermittent retrieve, bouncing the bottom, etc. all while working structure throughout the water column.

Leaving a jig sitting motionless on the bottom does not cover water and usually does not trigger a reaction strike.

Good luck!
