I think the average age of five the six of us on this trip is around 65 (I'm 70), although we had one 22 year-old along (gotta get the youngsters involved). The Kett portages..."the best of times/the worst of times"--on the one hand a beautiful walk in the woods--there are long stretches of the two portages that traverse high, open, granite ridges, the trail marked with rock cairns and bordered by mosses and wildflowers. There are also usually downed trees to negotiate over/under or around. We cut what we could with our small Pocket Boy saws. There are several stretches where the trail drops into swampy areas and is actually a flowing stream and several places where there is almost always a flooded rock garden or two. Bugs make it interesting--we were lucky to hit it between the black flies and the mosquitoes. The way I measure it the first portage out of Kett is about 1/2 mile and the second is about 3/4 mile. If you travel to Kett via Tuck Lake beware the Tuck portage landing--it is a steep rock slab covered with lichens and if it is at all wet it is treacherous. The first portage from Tuck to Kett is flooded by beavers midway (there are trees down also) so you have to load the canoes and paddle through the beaver pond to get to the next landing. Take your time, enjoy the scenery--it could be much drier in August!

Springer2	06/16/2019 08:40PM   Zwater: "How many portages for that production?" 8 in via Prairie Portage and the Basswood River, 11 more to and from McIntyre and out the Kett portages. Still recovering 10 days later (I'm 70).
