flynn: "Heading up the Gunflint this weekend and I'll be trying to secure a laker for my trip partner who has never caught a fish larger than 8 inches. Based on lake topo I know where to look, but I will always take tips. What are water temps at? What baits are working? What depth are the fish at?

If I had to guess, surface temps are around 55F and lakers are probably eating cisco/shad-colored baits in about 40-60ft of water?

Any success stories?"

Just north of Pickerel.......last week, we found 56 degree surface water, and lakers in 30 ft of water on ciscos.....

Thanks for the input... sounds like close to what I expected. Could get lucky and find some or could get straight up skunked. I've got a plethora of white and silver baits (and plenty with some color too) so hopefully I can locate a few and entice them to eat.

I was on Rose Lake last week and was catching them trolling crankbaits 15' down in 20 to 40 feet of water. My biggest was about 10-12 pounds. I found some very nice smallmouth in 15 to 20 feet of water relating to large boulders. I caught a personal best 22 incher on a #9 shallow shad rap.

I was on Saganaga this past weekend, fished hard for two days with techniques and in spots which usually produce trout, 50-60 FOW, fishing anywhere from right on the bottom to 20-30 feet off. Water surface temp was 61 degrees. No fish caught and very few marked on the locator. Not sure where they went. Sometimes I swear there's a trap door in the bottom of the lake that they disappear into, only to re-appear later. Hope you have better luck than I did.

Fall lake trout fishing can be tough if water doesn't cool down by time of your trip.

Well season closed now.

Got an update after the trip... fishing was pretty dead on West Pike as I suspected it might be. Trip partner and I threw the kitchen sink. Generally silver & white colored lipless & deep crankbaits, spinnerbaits, 3.8" Swing Impact Fats (on a swimbait head and as trailers), and jerkbait, along with red/craw colored squarebills and medium depth crankbaits, a couple medium sized topwater lures, a couple different Mepps #2-3 Aglias, a 1/4oz Texas rigged tube, purple Deep Tail Dancer, shad colored deep 6th Sense crankbait, 3/4oz and 1 3/4oz UV silver and purple flutter spoons, 1/2oz chartreuse round jigheads with 4" white twister tails. Seriously we threw it all out there, for smallies and lakers, and I only got 1 smallie, maybe 12" long, on a 3/8oz white-chartreuse spinnerbait. Pretty disappointing but I kind of expected it with the recent rainy/stormy weather and dropping temps. I didn't get a water temp but based on how cold my feet and hands got when I put them into the water, compared to mid-spring when I semi-froze my butt off this year, knowing that water was 52-55F, I'd say water this weekend was probably around 60F.
