You wont have much of an issue finding Walleye shallow in May. What time are you going? Smallmouth season opens on the 23rd and they should be plentiful as well.
Easiest thing to do on the fire lakes is bobber fish with a small 1/16th ounce jig. Pink, white or chartreuse. I'm a fan of leeches anytime of the year, some only use minnows in cold water. If you do use a leech, hook it through the middle of the body, not behind the sucker as it will give better movement.
Focus on any rock formations and dont be afraid to move around a bit. Fish may be a little lethargic after the spawn with the cold water. More likely to stay in places than be moving all around. If you're not getting any bites in an area after 10-15 minutes, go somewhere else. Also focus on the northern shorelines as they will warm up faster
